Re: Container ship fires

Hi Ash, With any luck the shipper has declared the container contents honestly, and the container would be placed in a appropriate place. All container vessels I've sailed on have had a "container fire fighting kit" onboard. This consisted of a couple hollow spikes, one fitted with a fire ...

USCG sink tsunami ship

The USCG have sunk the tsunami fishing boat Ryou-Un Maru 195 miles of the Alaskan coast. " The ship may have carried more than 7,500 litres of diesel fuel, officials said." The USCG will spare no expense and give no quarter in thier pursuit of polluting seafarers, but salvage of the fuel l...

Bad things happen in threes!

Unforunately there are ships running aground and sinking all the time, and it is most likely due to the Costa Concordia that this ship has gained some media attention. What ever the reason it is definately not a good time to be an itallian seafarer! If anything good should come and stay of the recen...

Re: Oil Pollution by a shore company gets slap on hand

This is not surprising, I remember highlighting a few years ago a case where a USCG cutter had discharged bilge water whilst ALONGSIDE through a magic pipe in Hawaii. The outcome of that case was the same, small fine and nothing much else. But I dont think that there is ship/shore divide, I think it...

Re: Costa Allegra

I've attached the Lloyds Open Form document, as you can see there isnt much to it. The ship’s master and the Salvage Master could agree Lloyd’s Open Form either verbally or by signing the form itself. The ship’s master then knew that help was at hand and he could not be criticised for making an agre...

Re: Costa Allegra

The trouble with a lot of older ships (and some newer ones), is that there was no thought put in to the engine room layout and the routing of the vital cables. Ships were designed with shortest possible cable runs to keep costs down, with the cables running right above some of the biggest fire hazza...

Re: Costa Allegra

"A French fishing boat fixed a line to the Costa Allegra during the night and was by dawn slowly pulling the stricken liner towards Desroches island, 150 miles south of Victoria, the Seychelles capital."* That'll be the biggest thing he has ever caught! I wonder what Salvage rights were ag...

Lets hope the pirates are too busy to read the news, and dont arrive before the rescue teams..

Built in 1969 if you believe Wikipedia but according to Sky News this is a sister ship to the Costa Concordia... :?

Re: Let's do a gas price comparison

Here in Copenhagen regular petrol is 12.8 DDK ($2.28) per litre and Diesel is 11.50 DKK ($2.04) per litre. Which doesnt seem as bad as I expected, but there is nearly 200% tax on a new car and almost as much on one imported when moving here. Cadillac CTS - 2,8 V6 Comfort 215HP - Man. gear Copenhagen...

Selandia centenary celebrations

November 4, 1911 ushered in a new era. That day the 6,800 dwt Selandia, the first oceangoing diesel engine-powered ship, was launched at Burmeister & Wain, Shipyard in Copenhagen, Denmark. Delivered in February 1912, the 370 ft x 53 ft Selandia was one of three such ships ordered by the Danish t...

Which will finish first, wreck removal or the lawsuit? Dozens of additional survivors from the Costa Concordia shipwreck have joined in the Florida lawsuit against the ship’s owners accusing them of gross negligence and fraud. The price tag for these accusations is $528 million in damages. The amend...

Re: thermal efficiency

Hi Pem, The colder the air the more dense it becomes, resulting in a higher scavenge, PCOMP and PMAX pressures. A rule of thumb figure is a 10 degree (C) increase in scavenge temperature will result in a 1 - 1.5 g/KWhr SFOC increase. The lower the air temperature the better for normal operation, a l...
