Re: 2009 Nov - CIMarE VIB Branch meeting and christmas social

Much as I would like to hear Dermot speak, I will be going through the mind lifting( or numbing) experience of being in meetings in Ottawa that week. Too bad, I am sure Dermot's presentation will be much more educational.

Re: Speed - Power - RPM - Pitch Question

Now that I know Steamboat Al is a Cadet, I feel a little better, he is a whole lot closer to the books then I am. I was thinking, really it is stamped on the props, then I realized I was thinking a mite bigger prop.

Good answer SA and welcome. Keep us old guys honest!

Re: Speed - Power - RPM - Pitch Question

That is right, you may need to get it retuned. But, I will tell you, we have played with prop pitch on our small boats and you could spend a fair bit of money and make things worse. If the boat has run with the prop for years, I'd leave well enough alone, unless you have the money to burn. And you w...

Re: 2nd Class Mtr Orals

My reasoning is that even if you complete all 6 perfectly, you can still only achieve %66.6666 because of how they may structure the marking system. IF you were allowed to answer 9 questions this would = %100. No, I am 99.9% sure you are not right in this reasoning. You can make above 66%. If not, ...

Re: Speed - Power - RPM - Pitch Question

we don't have the double enders in the East, so seeing the motorboats out West was a novelty for me. I have seen some lovely boats out there. But, being in ship repair myself, I sooner admire from afar as I am too aware of costs and too cheap to pay for it out of my pocket. You may find your prop is...

Re: Speed - Power - RPM - Pitch Question

I have to ask, is this boat one of the double enders that I have seen around the coast?

Re: 2nd Class Mtr Orals

Also has anyone heard of a maximum percentage possible on the written exams. I'm inclined to think it's impossible to get more than about 67% (6 of 9 questions, each question carries %11.111). Maybe this is just paranoid thinking but considering if you answer more than 6 only the lowest 6 are accep...

Re: On the Car deck

It is in the first movie. Apollo has landed his father's reconditioned viper on Rosaline's ship, Colonial One. So all of the shots of that landing bay is done on the ferry. It is funny, you expect the landing bay of a space ship so you see it, not the car deck of a ferry :D If you like this stuff, y...

You caught me out!! I'm a Nerd, I've watched this movie about 6 times. Just never listened to the comment part.
But I was bored and slightly jetlagged on a rainy afternoon .

On the Car deck

In a fit of boredom, I watched the Battle Star Galactica movie on DVD, then watched the comments after. It turns out portions of the movie had been filmed onboard a laid up BC ferry. I flipped back to the movie and checked, there you go, complete with car lane markings. The actors came down the pass...

Re: Disaster

And they did all of that by a flashlight, flat out speed and a lot of choice words for the ship owner. The thought with the load bank was to ensure that the emergency would carry the rated load. On a lot of ships it is difficult to load the generator up during the weekly/monthly tests. The costs can...
