Re: Marine Engineering - Practical Tips & Tricks

Talking of tappet / rocker adjustment just reminded me of the old feeler gauge trick. You would be boasting of this new warranted for life set of feeler gauges that perhaps mum had bought you. Everyone would admire this new set of gauges going from two thousands to maybe fifty. One day some wag had ...

Re: Marine Engineering - Practical Tips & Tricks

Yes, I well remember the acetylene tricks, we had an old oxy/acet profile cutter, big old beast it was. You had to make up a template of the plate you were flame cutting with a sheet of 22 gauge mild steel, this would be drilled and bolted to the top of the profile cutter and a spring loaded roller ...

Re: Sacrifical anodes

I hear on the jungle drums and smoke signals messaging that the Red Indian Tribe are getting restless as to why all you folk in Nova Scotia can't name their famous device into which the anode shown lives. You must remember that as they are but a fast canoe ride down the coast from you that this also...

Re: Perkins Motor bent pushrods soon after turbo overheated

Unbelievable or what? Still can't believe some people I meet have such a skill level even today. And with a ticket! Maybe your Bodger swallowed the hook, went shoreside and ended up doing the tappets on this Perkins? Small world sometimes.

Re: Marine Engineering - Practical Tips & Tricks

Hah, forgot about that one. Reminds me of the apprentice who used to do that a lot and further reminds me of his other party piece trick. Some of our work overhalls used to have in the right hand leg a rule sleeve sewed in, part of the overhalls. To save loosing rules in the top pocket over the side...

Re: Perkins Motor bent pushrods soon after turbo overheated

Well it's coming up eighteen months now re the bent pushrods and here we are left hanging and unable to conclude the mysterious bent rods and as such will forever wonder as to the cause. I always think that you have to conclude all matters even if you sometimes draw the wrong conclusion, at least it...

Re: Tips & Tricks

Well, here's one for folk with, how can I say, more hours / experience on the hour meter of life and who ever at some point in their career came across magnetos, in outboards/ motorbikes and marine engines. One cyl up to six and beyond, the lesson to be learnt was don't be the last one in the line w...

Re: FIZZERS

One Fizzer control unit at work 24/7 . The green light shows the unit is live, the red one I have caught on the peak of the cycle as it flashes when operating correctly. The two way box on the right shows one feed in and two out, it's a splitter box and feeds two transducers. I understand from swall...

Re: Tips & Tricks

Something That I can't remember the last time I did it, again done more in the past than now. Hydraulic extraction of bushes in blind holes? Spigot bushes were a favourite, flush down inside the flywheel so even if you had a three legged internal extractor because there was no clearance down the bot...

Re: Tips & Tricks

Reading old posts on this subject and B.P.'s mention of grinding the drill offset reminded me of when you are drilling and the drill wanders off centre the method used to bring it back to where you originally centre punched it. Out with your old tempered half round chisel, ( you know the one you use...

Re: Sacrifical anodes

Spare sacrificial pencil anode for y image.jpg our divers watch, well it could be if you still have that old chunky one that you use to pose with in the bath when playing the underwater " hunt the soap " game in your youth. But in what auxiliary does it live? Just about to fit it. It's in ...

Re: Amongst My Souveniers

I understand SOLAS played a big part in ensuring very little wood was to be carried on board liners and the like in recent years for fire risks? beautiful ships like Kungsholm (1966 ) used to have fantastic woodwork throught the ship, mahogany etc and a joy to behold, real craftsmanship job. No chro...
