ArkSea Jumper

You are on the other side of the pond...have you ever run into anyone that has done any of these online courses?
Are they worthwhile?

Re: A Bad Watch

I wasn't directly involved in this, but I think the problem was that the bilge strainer was dirty enough that the pump couldn't get an adequate suction. That valve is directly above the shaftline, so well under water. I think it was the treated sewage OVBD. One of the Managers approached me, in conce...

Re: A Bad Watch

This shaft space has deep bilges, but the pump couldn't keep up. They had to shut the watertight door to the engineroom.

Wow, that is impressive in a car-accident-sort of way.

Re: Thrust Pads

The Irish CSI, a new series coming to a TV near you :D .

So if the Mfr is not taking responsibility, where do you have to ship the pads for refurbishment?

Re: Thrust Pads

These pads must have failed in a very short period of time, I had thought it was a failure over a period of weeks. In the gearbox that we had bearing problems with, the high tin levels in the LO analysis indicated there were bearing issues and we were monitoring it very closely. When the temperature...

Re: Thrust Pads

I was thinking the same thing Martin. Since it is in the newer gearboxes it could be a manufacturing design issue. Is the pattern in the steel back, and as the Babbitt wears, the pattern is being exposed? The cracking in the babbiit is concerning. It is good you caught this before the Babbitt starte...

Re: Thrust Pads

This is an excellent one! There were 4 of us, the PDM engineer (predictive maintenance), the LO analysis guy, myself and the other marine engineer, clustered around the computer monitor having a look. Consensus, after a lot of debate, is that is a pretty cool pattern LOL. ( what can I say, we just f...

Re: Hull Cracks

This is from a jet boat. It cracked right at a stiffener. It must have been a hard spot.

Re: which route is best?

It is good that you are clear that you want to do this. It is several years to get the sea time for a Chiefs ticket and if you go ashore before then, a 4th or a 3rds are not much good to you. A Chiefs ticket with the experience behind it opens doors ashore, but you won't make the same salary as sea-...

Re: which route is best?

Give the CG College a try. They will pay you, feed you and house you and give you the sea time. There are a lot of people who seem to look down at the CG, but why starve while you are trying to get your ticket, if you are really serious about it. https://psjobs-emploisfp.psc-cfp.gc.ca/psrs-srfp/appl...

Re: Good Maintenance Onboard Ships - Class NK

Thanks for posting this. I followed the link and found an PLC warning that made me sit up and take notice.: The International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA) has recently issued a safety warning following a tragic accident suffered by a member company, which resulted in four fatalities and thr...

Re: CG College

Does anyone have any personal experiences/info about the Canadian Coast Guard College? OK here is the poop. You attend for 4 years, room and board included, a wage included. Sorry I have no idea what it is. Part of the 4 years is book learning, part of it is sea phase on the CG ships. They get you t...

Re: Corrosion pieces

Actually when I read you original post, I thought what dumbass would design a seawater system meant to have piping fail  'cause we all know it FAILS at the WORST possible time. Then I thought it was such a dumbass idea that I had to have misunderstood your post.It is even worse to hear that so...
