Re: Those TV Ships That Flip Over and the Ensuing Fun

It's not only movies which take liberties with facts, some authors do it too! I found "Gray Seas Under" by Farley Mowatt (known in the North as "Hardly Knowit" after that farce about wolves) absolutely hilarious. In the opening pages he places Dundee, Scotland, on Clydeside (it's...

Re: Curious Case Of the Missing Dock

I used to live there, so I can say "pochmihone, spieroch" with the best of 'em! :) I'm back on the mainland, but fog prevents me seeing the shipyard. You'll be able to see it here: http://www.halifaxwebcam.ca/live/index.php?CURRENT_CAM=macdonaldbridge&SET_CAM=macdonaldbridge when the f...

Re: GOM Oiled

Couple or three points here, I worked on the BP rig Forties Bravo way back in the 70s. Oil pumped from Alpha, Bravo and Delta (the other 3 rigs in the field) is collected on Charlie and pumped 120 miles ashore from there. I worked the control room on Bravo. We had a sudden spike of over 3000psi in t...

Re: Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO)

Are you looking for an "Approved Course" designation? There's no need for that really, the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and your candidate's success rate in the Examinations (for which there is no charge) will prove your pudding.

Re: Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO)

Bravo Zulu Brian. We have about that many a month here in Atlantic Canada, so there is a demand for the Certificate, people actually want to comply with the Act. Numbers of SVMO exams tend to increase in spring and early summer, for obvious reasons. Last year's crop of tour boat employees have moved...

That very thing is covered in the Marine Personnel Regulations, section 108, which can be accessed on page 20 of this bi-lingual document: http://laws.justice.gc.ca/PDF/Regulation/S/SOR-2007-115.pdf or you can see the full meal deal, in English only, here: http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/SOR-2007-115/F...

Re: Small Vessel Machinery Operator (SVMO)

Brian, You don't need an employee letter for a CDN number, that's for a discharge book. You need proof of citizenship or a permanent resident card for a CDN number. There's no charge for a CDN number, but a discharge book costs $10 and you'll have to provide 2 passport type photos for it. so: CDN nu...

Re: Lloyds List wants your stories

You are aware, of course JK, of who is one of the biggest shipowners in Canada. Have a look at the "Tankership Tromedy" elsewhere on Martin's site. Very illuminating as far as shipyard/class relationships go. The goings on skirt classification as criminal activity....but only just! It does...

Re: Fatigue

Here's a link to the MCA which has other links (and he told two friends etc....) to an IMO report on fatigue. Very enlightening, and very relevant given the recent application of the Safe Manning aspect of Marine Personnel Regs, part 2, division 2 (sect. 200 et seq) and the requirement for Minimum S...

Re: Seafarer Medical and Marine First Aid

The changes are driven by Canada's compliance with STCW. Requirements for Marine Advanced First Aid and Marine Medical Care are in STCW VI/4, tables 1 and 2 respectively. The MAFA courses approved and presented by St John Ambulance and Red Cross are over 4 or 5 days, the training Certificate is vali...
