Re: Cruise Ship Lock Out procedures in the Dark ages. Why?

Hello Martin, You are on a small island called Île-aux-Coudres, about an hour east of Québec City. The small shipyard you are in used to fabricate small tugs for international export but now Groupe Océan uses it to refit their tugs. It has a greater berth capacity than they need so they also repair ...

Ditch them, go work for a company where things are done properly, a person with your qualifications should have no trouble doing that.

Re: Just can't find one

Thanks Madzng,
Yes I have checked the Wilhelmsen internet site but from what I could see their on-line catalogue is far from being as detailed as the old paper version from Unitor, I now regret throwing out my ten year old Unitor catalogue last spring.

Just can't find one

Hello all, While moving a large piece of machinery, a small CO2 nozzle was broken off from the fitted fire extinguishing piping. It is as simple a part as can be, it is a small fitting with NPT threads and slots to diffuse the smothering gas. I thought it would take me a matter of minutes to find a ...

Re: Assumption Kills

The simplest and fastest way to make a ballast tank safe to enter is to fill it with water to push out the stale air and empty it again so that fresh air enters the tank. He mistakenly thought this procedure had been employed since he was told the tank was full. He obviously missed a step, because t...

Re: U.S. - New EPA Discharge Permit Proposals October 2008

Don't panic guys, I just read up a little bit on this subject and it really isn't as bad as it seems. Most provisions of this new american regulation are aimed at 'minimizing the effects of'. For example, in the case of deck water run-off they do not expect you to measure anything but upper deck scr...

Re: Chinese Yards and welding

I don't know if the quality of Chinese steel is still at the bottom of the barrel, but in 2002 I took an advanced machining course and we would use Canadian steel to do our marked projects and cheap Chinese steel for our refresher training and trials. I once got a piece of Chinese steel that I could...

Hello JK, it never occurred to me to try that because I didn't think it would make any difference, but thanks for the tip, works like a charm.

Keep getting kicked out

Salut Martin, every time I post a reply I cannot get back to the index page, I just wind up going in circles until I close the second page and then re-enter and login again a second time if I have anything more to say. No big deal, just a little annoying. Until next time, cheers

Re: First Class Naval Arch

Hello Sulzer, I have written the naval architecture exam in late 2006. Simply take the Reed's books and do all the questions from all the chapters and I guarantee you will pass the first time. If you cut corners and try to do it the fast way there's a good chance I will say 'I told you so'. It is no...

Ouch! The caption by your name says 'enduring contributor', by these pictures I think that means that you have been 'enduring' a lot of pain in your job! Was this prolonged use with water ingress/bad oil or was it a quick burn out?

Re: How to explain hydrolock in a diesel engine?

There sure have been some party animals coming off the ships to have some fun ashore, maybe even too much fun because there are a few bars in Bermuda that have a small sign over the entrance with the caption: 'No dogs or Canadian sailors allowed'. I will not go into details but somehow rental scoote...
