Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention
I found that it isn't very difficult to "stump" college engineers, just ask them to anneal, forge, harden and temper mild steel, or even the steel making process. What's the difference between a Besemer and an open hearth furnace, for example. Both 1st year apprenticeship questions for a f...

Re: BC Ferries looking for senior engineers
It should be noted that sea service as Junior watchkeeper, or Junior Engineer, no longer counts for upgrading Certificates. Only time as Engineer In Charge of a Watch will count.

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention
Pending Chief Engineer, STCW, applications have been cancelled and any CoCs issued recalled. A Registered Letter to that effect has gone to the affected. There is, I believe, one ship registered in Canada which uses a 1000 v system, the CCG icebreaker, Louis St Laurent. CCG is exempted from the CSA ...

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention
The new SSB has reinstated the Marine Personnel Regulations, or, if you like, you want the ticket, you do ALL the Exams. There are a few additions, too. All levels require training in Marine Law and Ships Business, and a course in Leadership and Team Management. There are additional Exams in 3rd Cla...

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention
I have no Idea who "Elizabeth in Ottawa" is, it's not a name I recognize. The STCW 2010 Chief Engineer, issued under SSB 05/2010, exceeds the requirements of STCW 2010, but falls far short of Canadian Marine Personnel Regulations and TP 2293. The problem, as I see it, is if we are to align...

Re: Engine Room Rating course available Western Canada
Why isn't the shipping industry paying for training? After all, they benefit from it. On the other hand, when STCW 2010 is fully implemented and STCW Certificates are regarded equally, you won't need Canadian ERRs and Engineers in the Canadian shipping industry, third world crews are much, much chea...

All change! CoCs issued under the SSB are valid until HQ in Ottawa says they are not.

$8000 bucks? That's a year's tuition in a University Bachelor's degree! Why would anyone waste that much money when ERRs are not required anyway?

Re: CoC as per STCW 2010 Manila Convention
It means, as far as I can make out, that all tickets issued under the SSB and all applied for, have been suspended.
