Re: Doom and Gloom

Yeah, not disagreeing with that. But I've had cadets from MI to BC, first year to last year, and I think I've really only had 1 I'd be comfortable enough to give him a watch... The real learning happens in the engine room, and the most important job of the 4th/3rd is to call the 2nd when shit goes d...

Re: Doom and Gloom

2 year program doesn't get exemptions for the proof of competency in the knowledge requirements; the equivalent of the part A's.

Re: Doom and Gloom

For the past number of years the number of graduates from the bridge side vs engine has frequently been about 4(or more):1. They get paid, essentially, the same as the equivalent engine rank. So if there has always been plenty of mates compared to the number of engineers, why do they earn ~ the same...

Re: how to survive a disaster

Socks and sandals, total turn off haha I've found in 'disaster' situations everything seems to go slow mo and my focus goes into tunnel vision. What I have to work with, essentials, fuck the rest, deal with task at hand, minimize damage/mitigate risk. Clearly that process must have been knocked in m...

That's why I asked about his cadet program dates.

Could go under old MPRs; or possibly just apply for it.

I always check the escape routes on planes before I take off, and size up who's in-between me and my closest escape haha

Re: Faculty - Nautical Institute Education, Marine, NSCC

We had a steam course at Marine Institute, besides Thermo steam teachings.

Also, I believe I remember seeing a similar ad last year and they were offering somewhere in the ball park of $80k range, if I recall correctly.
Not bad for picking on little punks all day heh

Re: Seatime requirements

As for sea time; to get your "second engineer officer" CoC you need at least 12 months of sea service on board vessels, other than stationary MOUs, that have a propulsion power of at least 750 kW, while serving in the function of an officer in charge of an engineering watch, a second engin...

China has long been a signed member of the IMO, didn't they have to comply with STCW standards before the Manila convention?

JollyJack wrote:"As amended" covers 2010 STCW amendments. If it says that, you can get a real job, go foreign as Chief on a real ship!
What makes foreign a real job?
Haha I get your tone, but I'm curious what would make that more appealing?

Re: Suicide and sea

I suffered symptoms of what would now be called Post Traumatic Stress for years. No illusions, It is a tough life at Sea. BP Something else kind of relatable; I'm sure we've all had the close call to almost game over moments doing what we do. Over a year ago I had a 'near miss' alright, if my react...

Re: Suicide and sea

Well said BP. I've stood on the transom and watched the surreal display at night, where the luminescence of the wake seems to entice one more step.....just one, into the warm water..,.,.,. but resisted and turned back. I must admit too I've had the same/similar feeling. Now; not to say it was a sui...

Re: TC 2nd Class needed for ex NTCL operations

Haha yeah fair, that's true too.

Crash course in learning and ingenuity though...I improved my skills more than 10 fold in that 3-4 months rather than, say, the previous 2 years aboard a new SUL Laker.
