Re: Common rail upgrade of 2 and 4 stroke engines
From what I understand both the newer Sulzer & MAN-B&W Slow Speed Engines now use a similar Air Spring exhaust valve and fuel system technologies so at first glance it is hard to tell the 2 engines apart. I recently watched a television program where on the cruse ship "Freedom of the Se...

Re: Common rail upgrade of 2 and 4 stroke engines
The new Sulzer Flex RTA and MAN B&W engines have common rail fuel systems with electronically controlled injection. Even the exhaust valves are controlled electronically This eliminates the requirement for a camshaft. I believe that Wartsila, the representatives for Sulzer, has developed a conve...

It's hard to tell without other points of reference but it looks like the result of an over torqued tie bolt on a 2 piece rod.

Re: Delegation of Inspection Services Canadian Coast Guard
You will have to go back to Harper's predecessor and heavy lobbying by Canadian domestic shipping companies to find the impetus for the delegation of inspection services to Class in Canada and the downsizing of Ship Safety. The fees and other costs for T/C & Class inspections can run into the th...

Re: steering gear question for seconds.
Jason Some High pressure steering systems, such as Wagner, with electrically controlled directional control valves utilizes the rudder position feed back signal to the steering control system to act as a hunting gear to bring the rudder back to a set position. Mechanical Hunting gears are usually fo...

Re: two questions that i'm having trouble with for the 2nd class
I've read though the responses and there is one thing you shouldn't forget when it comes to the Bilge System that is the "Bilge Ejection Valve" That is is your "Last Line of Defense" against flooding in the Engine Spaces. The bilge ejection system is a critical part of a ship's b...

Re: Numbering of main engine and auxilliary engine cylinders
Class Societies and many Countries Transportation Authorities over the years as a method of standardization have adopted a standard of numbering of surveyable machinery components from the forward end of a vessel. Class Societies consider each cylinder of a Main Engine regardless of the configuratio...

If the purifier is operating on heavy fuel or lube oil it sounds like you are getting a shot of cold oil through the purifier.
Try letting the oil recirculate through the heater for a couple of minutes before starting the process program.

If you had more time you could find the answers to most of your questions in any good Marine Diesel Book such as Reed's Marine Diesel Engines Considering you are short of time I will attempt to answer some of your questions. 1 Duel fuel engines should not be a problem because most slow speed engines...

Re: Appropriate use of materials??
I've forgotten how many times I've seen leaks in pipes and other equipment repaired in what is known in Canada as a "Red Green Special". A rag or some other material over the leak held on with many turns of Duct Tape! I have also seen a hydraulic control valve seal leak declared "Fixe...

Re: correction factor
It is the universal standard that when figuring out the volume of fuel in a tank the temperature correction is set to 1 at 15 degC. As fuel is heated or cooled it expands or contracts at a set rate for every degree change in temperature, depending on specific gravity. Multiplying the measured volume...

Re: Electrical Gauges Over Reading
Most electronic systems like yours use shielded cables between the transducer and the computer or PLC. If there is a break or damage to this shield, possibly around the engine, or poor shield grounding will cause problems like you describe through out the system. Troubleshooting a problem like this ...
Re: GOM Oiled
From what I've read here it seems like the expression on those who refuse to acknowledge history are bound to repeat it fits quite well here. If memory serves me correctly that emergency training plus a convoluted and confusing chain of command lead to the "Ocean Ranger" disaster.

Re: lower lakes?
Lower Lakes is a viable company with both Canadian & American registered vessels. Most of the vessels are Self Unloaders with a couple of bulkers. Most of the vessels are old American steam ships converted to motor ships (50 to 60 years old) and some modern vessels by Great Lakes standard that w...
