Re: seafarer certification fraud
Jolly jack, it worries me when you post "Not a lot". What is "A lot?" When it comes to certification fraud, and all the hoops we must go through to keep our certificates valid, this is not really a blow to my confidence in our system. I know of situations where a lower certificat...

Re: Is there any cooks on this forum
My knowledge of what cooks put up with comes from many years of working on board Arctic tugs with a small crew of 14. What I can say is the hours are long, crews are uncompromising. The cooks job is the hardest on board due mainly to the fact that meals must be cooked at the same time everyday, and ...

Re: Ship of the year - headache of the year
I agree with "snipes" on the majority of the points he made. I too find it hard to comprehend why such a bad fuel problem could overtake such a modern vessel. But then I would have to agree with what has been mentioned about being overwhelmed by a bug contamination and running out of filte...

Re: Ship of the year - headache of the year
I understand about PP requirements, at NTCL we never had issues with PP's. But one year about 7 seasons ago, NTCL purchased MDO on the world market with a set of specs that were to be met. The fuel came out of South America. It arrived in Vancouver then was transhipped to Tuk. Once there a test was ...

Re: Ship of the year - headache of the year
I'll bet it was low sulphur fuel. Happened to us and the injector pumps began to give out. Doesn't take many pumps to shut down a Cat. Ended up pouring lub oil into the fuel tanks to assist with lubrication until this extremly dry fuel was used up.

I would have to agree Big Pete, a quick jump to a faulty conclusion made for a terrible mishap.

Re: The hammer drops (on Canadian cabotage)
Another sad testament to our fearless money floggers in Government. All our Government Beauroctrats care about is how high can their pay be increased and how their pension will be affected. To hell with anyone else. Very sad Martin, very sad. It is obvious to me that the government feels it is in ou...

Re: New Construction Faux Pas
How about running the bilge discharge line from the forward cargo pump room aft to the sludge tank, but on the way the line goes through the fwd HFO tank, which happened to have a 20 foot head. The line cracked inside the fuel tank, and doing my rounds came across a 2 foot gyser of bunker coming out...

Re: summertime lull
I suspect the information given by JollyJack might be intended for me, and thanks for that. But it was 15 years ago when I attempted my 1st class, three times, to no avail and no interview. Like I said, its all water under the bridge, there was no need for a 1st class certificate working with NTCL a...

Re: summertime lull
The Edmonton Queen, do you recall a Captain by the name of Henry Oakley? He was one of my first skippers I sailed with in the Arctic. I understand he was working on the old Queen after he retired from NTCL, he was over 75 years old. This man could read a river like no other, he never needed a chart ...

Re: summertime lull
It sure is nice to know we are in the top 4. But seriuosly, I have sailed with Chiefs who had a 1st Class Combined, and the things I witnessed were unbelievable. I should be clear here, these engineers were from other country's before landing in Canada, but how they were able to hold, or obtain a ti...
