Re: Cooking oil used on shipping run
Interesting 22,00 litres for a voyage, looks to be a small feeder container ship, maybe 1590 NRT, 3,000 DWT, about 3,000 kW. Doesn't say what the length of voyage is, or if the fuel was used for everything or just the auxiliaries. They burnt 22,000 litres of Bio Fuel, maybe 19 tonnes in total and &q...

Re: New engine
Lots of ways to use the waste heat, boiler in the exhaust stack, use the engine cooling water and trubo charger air coolers to preheat the feed water and generate steam to drive a steam turbine and either generate electricity or mechanically feed the power back into the shaft. Turbo chargers are so ...

Re: "Nanotechnology can cure shipping's sulphur conundrum"
This sounds like a fantastic idea if true. I imagine that there would be considerable economies of scale, and because installing the plant on the ship has a capital cost, maintenance cost and causes loss of earnings due to the volume and weight taken for the plant, and also will require Man hours to...

Re: Weld defects in new build for CCG
As I understood the original article, it was fully automated Robot Welding, so it should have followed the programmed procedures exactly, so what caused the problem?? Excessive welding current set on machines? Wrong choice of welding wires? or poor quality plate/ filler rods? Did they increase the w...

Re: Solar Powered Ship
There is very little known about it, Mainly because nobody has built a ship that is entirely solar powered! Some have Photo Voltaic Panels all over the superstructure linked to storage batteries that will keep the lights on for a few hours in Port, but nothing that I have heard of that will power pr...

Re: MEDIUM SPEED ENGINE LUB OIL
"General Average" It is the Fundamental Rule of Marine Law & Insurance that the Ships Master can sell or use any part of the Cargo or even the ship itself in if it is in the best interests of the shipowner and cargo owners, the cost is then shared between all the parties involved in th...

Re: Volunteers Requested
Thanks for your support, there are plenty of volunteers for weeding round the outside of the building, and painting, but not many willing to heave on stilsons and get dirty.

Volunteers Requested
I have recently started volunteering at Nottingham Industrial Museum, this was originally run by the Local Government, but due to funding cuts is being handed over to unpaid volunteers to run. There are an interesting collection of old steam engines and other artefacts, which you can see on this lin...

Re: Telephone Cord Stops Main Engine
I feel old reading this, didn't there used to be something in the Rgs Requiring a definite positive action to activate Emergency stops? If a phone cord brushing over it activates it, what about a fly landing on the screen? Just because you can put a hundred different functions on one touch screen at...

Re: Westfalia separator, model: OSC 50-01-536/60
If you are purifying HFO or Lube oil this can happen when the oil in the discharge line is cold and highly viscous causing excessive back pressure. If this may be the case make sure that you recirculate the oil through the heater until it is at the correct purifying temperature, 98 C for HFO, 95 C f...

In my experience the Eastern European yards do a good job on the steelwork at very competitive prices, so long as the final outfitting is done in one of Dammen's Western European shipyard's they should get a very good ship for the money.

Re: El Faro letter to NTSB
I thing that the people on board the vessel, including the Master, had every RIGHT to expect that a Subscription weather forecasting Service, that the owners/operators had presumably carried out a "Cost Benefit Analysis" on before paying for, would provide a better service than the "F...
