SCAM ALERT

Post by JollyJack »

They're at it again! I had an enquiry about a British management company called Royal Marine Authority, which is a new one on me! The e-mail address looks a bit dodgy ".gb.net", (should be co.uk for a UK address, looks like this is to a .net website) the street address given (40, Ely Place, London EC1N 6SN) is a church (look it up on Google Street view) and the telephone number (+44 7053 856597) comes back as "not in service" or, sometimes, "must be connected by an operator". They want money up front, always a gigantic red flag, for documents which, if you are joining a foreign flag ship, the Manager always provides.

The Saga e-mail address given on the "Employment Letter" is given as SAGA CRUISES.

Head Office: Enbrook Park, Sandgate,

Folkestone, Kent CT20 3SE,

UnitedKingdom.

The e-mail address and tel number at Saga HR dept is given on the Saga website as:

Please call our HR team on 01303 774707, from 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday or email you question into [email protected]

Note THAT e-mail ends in .co.uk the proper form.

Here is what the scam letter says:

---------- Forwarded message ----------
From: Saga Cruises <[email protected]>
Date: Sun, 19 Jan 2014 21:07:17 +0000
Subject: Employment Letter, Contract, Terms and Conditions

Dear ,

We would like to use this opportunity to congratulate you and also to inform you that you have been chosen by the management as one of the applicants to be employed in our company. Attached to this email are your Employment Letter, the company's "General Terms and Condition" and your Employment Contract for you to sign and return back to us.

As for your employment process, you will have to acquire your UK Seafarers Identity Document (SID) and Certificate of Equivalent Competency (CEC), which is required by the British Law for both UK citizen and foreign workers before they can work in any Luxurious Cruise Ship or Yacht that is sailing from the United Kingdom. These documents will also grant you access into the United Kingdom as they serve as your working visa in the Marine Sector. So there will be no need to apply for visa again after you have procured these documents.

Kindly contact Mr. Colin Harland of the ROYAL MARINE AUTHORITY to put you through with the process of acquiring your UK SID and CEC document by email at [email protected] or call +447053856597.
Also attach your signed employment contract in your email to the ROYAL NAVY AUTHORITY as proof of employment.

Do keep us updated as soon as you have started with your document processing process so that we can proceed with your employment process by reserving your accommodation and also making plans to cover your travel expenses to finalise your employment with us.

Thank you for your anticipated cooperation and hope to work with you in the future as a SAGA CRUISES Staff.

Please go through terms and conditions attached to this email before signing Employment contract and contacting the ROYAL MARINE AUTHORITY.

Best regards,

Simon Page.

Re: SCAM ALERT

Post by The Dieselduck »

With such huge economic impacts occurring due to the pandemic, lots of jobs scams are re surging. please be aware, as they are getting very tricky to tell now. There's nothing new about scams, especially in our business, which sometimes straddles that legitimacy boundaries on a good day.

Please be careful who you communicate with and what information you share. This email came across my servers today, purporting to be from maersk. Being such a big organization, the subtleties in the email address / domain are hard to spot.

Here is one of the email i got:

From: Ellen Morgan [mailto:[email protected]]
Sent: February 22, 2021 10:36 PM
To: [email protected]
Subject: Maritime Offshore Vacancies

Hello,
I am contacting you because you work in the maritime industry. For urgent Offshore Maritime Employment with Maersk Line UK Limited. As Masters, Engineers, Officers etc in all types of vessels; Send your CV now to: [email protected]
Do not reply to me. Contact Maersk Line UK Limited Human Resource with the email above.

Best of Luck.
Ellen Morgan[/b]

Here's what Maersk says:

Maersk Employees impersonated in phishing scam
16 May 2019
E-Commerce Logistics

We would like to alert all customers to the issue of phishing scams. We have become aware of a scam in which genuine Maersk employees' name and position are being used by fraudsters when contacting our customers. However, these emails come from various suspicious email addresses.

We would like to remind you that all genuine correspondence will come from @maersk.com domains, and any other addresses should be treated as suspicious.

Please be mindful of your own internet and email security, and do not reply to unsolicited email messages that encourage you to launch a web hyperlink or attachment or provide log in information. Maersk will never ask for your log in information in this manner.

If you receive a suspicious email or are unsure if an email is genuine, report it to us immediately by calling 0800 MAERSK (623 775) or via your usual Maersk contact.

The more typical scam involves sending money for visa and "processing fees", but even sharing a bit of information can lead to trouble. I was reading about the massive fraud being perpetrated in the US with COVID assistance. Criminal organization are "buying" reems of personal information from scammer and hackers, then applying for relief benefits. The person whose personal information is used, is then facing the lack of those services, but also the financial and legal consequences as well.

Yup, there are some very cruel yet creative people out there, id be nice if they focused their energy on more productive and beneficial endeavors, but until then, please be extra cautious and vigilant. Seafarers have a knack for being easy and trusting, but this can be harmful as well.
