CG College

Post by Jon »

Ok, I've been trying damn hard to get a job. But still no bites.
I'm beginning to wonder if my Aussie accent is putting people off.
Does anyone have any personal experiences/info about the Canadian Coast Guard College?
Is the pay reasonable while you attend?
Are the credentials useful outside of the coast guard?

Just to fill everyone in - I'm on the east coast of Canada and have an engine room rating.
I have worked for several years as an engineer in Australia but those tickets aren't valid here.
So I have to get more sea time to be able to take the 4th class exam.

Still positive but could use any info or advice.
Thanks all, Jon

There is a new Director there from what I have heard and enrollment is to be going up.
Have you looked at the website at all? There is an open house there on May 31, you could have a look around and talk to some of the instructors.

Thanks JK, I have read their website.
It looks like an alright place.
I think I might take a trip up there even if for the sake of just knowing
what goes on in the college.
Thanks for your help.

OK here is the poop. You attend for 4 years, room and board included, a wage included. Sorry I have no idea what it is. Part of the 4 years is book learning, part of it is sea phase on the CG ships. They get you there and back wherever in the country the ship is. You get 2 trips home a year, paid. I think the sea phase is more wages.
You get all of the training, simulator, machine shop time you require.
You get a couple of small boats to play with-or did.
There is a full blown machine shop there with an Alco diesel engine that is used for training.
If you are strong in the math subjects you will do well.

You give 4 years of your life when you graduate to CG. That's the deal or was.

Now, I am going to give you a list of some of the positions of past grads. It is pretty impressive:
Chief Inspector at Bonavista Petroleum
Shift Manager at FPL-E Seabrook Station
Senior Marine Inspector PWGSC
Risk Management Advisor
Senior Marine inspector
Director, Fleet Support
Director, Program Planning
Manager New Construction
General Manager
President at V Navigation inc.
Manager, Acquisitions
Team Leader
Senior Project Manager
Technical Inspector Supervisor
President and CEO
Senior Marine Inspector
Marine Business Development Manager

And that does not include the Chief in CG fleet and sailing worldwide.
You graduate with a 4th and it is up to you where you will end up!!

If you go to the open house, try to speak to Bruce Marsh, he is one of the engineering instructors and a really good fellow to talk to.
