World Maritime Day Conference
The goal is to produce a world-class conference in Vancouver in recognition of World Maritime Day.

This year’s theme is “The Year of the Seafarer.”

The timing for this event in Vancouver is to take advantage of a joint meeting of major global shipping interests: OCIMF, ITOPF and INTERTANKO. The North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) will be joining them to produce this World Maritime Day Observance.

NAMEPA has been promoting World Maritime Day in North America for the past five years, and have engaged in a dialog with both Canada and the United States (Transport Canada and the United States Coast Guard) with the intent to alternate between the two countries and the coasts. It seemed obvious to us that Vancouver would be the perfect location for the 2010 observance. The synergies with the other organizations was an added benefit, and both Transport Canada and the USCG agreed.

When: November 17-18, 2010, Vancouver, British Columbia

Where:

Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel
1030 Canada Place Way
Vancouver, BC V6C 0B9

The North American debut of the new “Anthem to the Seafarer” will be held on November 17 at Christ Church Cathedral.

November 18 will be the World Maritime Day Observance including an all-day conference with breaks and a luncheon, ending with a closing reception. One panel discussion at the all-day conference will be “Prevention and Response: The Role and Responsibility of Government and Industry.” Another discussion will be “Balancing Human Rights and Environmental Crimes.”
