Here at I am at the conference, a very elaborate event, many things to see and hear. Very impressive. I guess this is where Tweeting would be more practical. Wish you were here...

Actually just spoke with JK in person. Always nice to connect with people in real life. Still pretty nervous about my presentation tomorrow afternoon.

Well Martin,

I would Imagine that "live tweeting" the Mari-Tech Conference may not be the thrill a minute high pace event one would expect, but I'm sure you would be able to bring it to life as you have done with this board and your website. I'd follow your tweets, as I'm sure there is some great discussion going on amongst the patrons.
Good luck with the presentation!

Cheers

Brad

Sidenote for you Martin,

Any buzz around the OETC and its effect on Canadian Seafarers? I'd love to be there to discuss it with those representing the shipping companies, to see their reaction to the announcement, and what it means to their HR departments. Does it help them, with more seafarers returning to work in Canada? Or does it negatively affect them as people demand higher wages to compensate, and leave as a result of not getting those higher wages?

Like I say, I'd love to be there, unfortunately unable to get away from St. John's.

Hey Brad, good to hear from you.

Well, unfortunately for the average seagoing marine engineer like you and I, the crowd here at Maritech, over 500 attendees, is a predominately government related one, focused on the various NSPS programs now afoot. I have seen very few indication that the shipping companies, familiar to most of us, are not much involved in this conference, much less, the HR dept of those various companies. There is a major contingency from the Navy, and almost equally large Coast Guard bunch too. Conspicuously missing though, Transport Canada, and major west coast players - ship operators from across Canada are also missing; so overall, besides a welcomed focus on the TSB, there is not much mention of commercial shipping and those professionals sailing aboard. Unfortunately, again, I have heard no mention of the OETC.

There has been several discussion about the "human element" in various presentations and panels, and the problems with "lack of", "under-experience", "unhappy" or just a workforce lacking "ownership", so hopefully I will be able to offer some solutions with Blue Riband, not just highlighting the numerous well known issues. I hope I will mention the OETC adequately, this afternoon.

Sorry Brad, did not get a chance to bring up the OETC extensively due to my presentation being cut short... But I did bring it up at the CIMARE AGM pre-meeting, where many were already familiar with the situation... which is good. I encouraged National Council to spread the word further.

Also, I Just published my take on the Mari Tech 2012 in Ottawa on The Monitor, the blog. If your interested, you can view at the link below.
