The Maritime Academy of Toledo Announces Participation with U.S. Navy for Fleet Week Visit

(Toledo, OH) --- Renee A. Marazon, Superintendent, The Maritime Academy
of Toledo, announced today the school’s and The Maritime Academy of
Toledo Foundation’s participation and active role with the U.S. Navy
during Fleet Week scheduled for August 23 – 27, 2012.

Fleet Week, in part, is the U.S. Navy’s commemoration of the 200th
anniversary of the War of 1812 and Toledo is one of 18 cities being
honored with visiting navy vessels. Scheduled to visit Toledo are USS
De Wert, a U.S. frigate; HMCS Ville de Quebec (VDQ), a Canadian frigate;

USS Hurricane, a coastal patrol ship; USCG Mobile Bay, a U.S. Coast
Guard ice cutting tug; and Niagara, a tall ship.

“This is an incredible honor for the City of Toledo, and The Maritime
Academy of Toledo is proud to work with the U.S. Navy on this event,”
said Ms. Marazon, who also is a member of Toledo’s Fleet Week
Committee.
“Our facilities on the second floor of One Maritime Plaza will serve
as
the Command and Control Center for the U.S. Navy and other local public
service agencies. Our cadets will take part in morning and evening
colors, as well as piping officers aboard ship. Our cadets will have
educational interactive experiences in the Academy classrooms, boat
building lab, and galley, as well as with the sailors in their ships’
galleys.”

The two frigates will dock at One Maritime Plaza along Water St. near
Walnut St. --- Near The Maritime Academy of Toledo.

“Since our building is located directly across from the ships that
will
be the most visited, The Maritime Academy will set up its rooms and
offices as corporate suites. We have four balconies and over 15 suites
that overlook the Maumee River where the USS De Wert and HMCS Ville de
Quebec will be moored. During Fleet Week our entire facility will be
transformed into a Hospitality Lounge where companies can entertain
clients, employees, or out of town guests,” said Ms. Marazon.

The Maritime Academy will also offer concession sales on its school
grounds during Fleet Week. Proceeds will benefit The Maritime
Academy’s U.S. Coast Guard uniform fund, transportation subsidies for
needy students, a new crane operator simulator, and upgrades to The
Academy’s bridge, engine, navigation and radar simulators that
students
use for training.

“Fleet Week also provides The Maritime Academy with an opportunity to
support the city’s effort to make the U.S. Navy’s visit to Toledo a
positive experience. Fleet Week provides The Maritime Academy with an
incredible community outreach opportunity. Those interested can tour
our school and see our resources and ability to train the next
generation of sailors and maritime professionals,” she said.
