2012 Nov - Ballast Water Treatment Technology, Houston

Post by The Dieselduck »

Dear colleague‚

Unsurprisingly the recent meeting of the IMO's MEPC didn't end with a resolution of all the outstanding technical issues nor a time frame for shipowners' questions to be answered. Indeed, the BWM convention is still some way short of ratification but it is US regulations and their planned enforcement in 2013 that now pose the biggest headache to shipowners and operators globally.

With the Californian State Lands Commission's rules requiring an even higher standard than that of the EPA, and widespread uncertainty about the efficacy of existing BWM technologies in freshwater environments, the decision of which system to purchase now has an added dimension.

Our Ballast Water Treatment Technology Conference in Houston on 27-28 November will bring together some of the most influential regulatory experts in the US, including:
• Chris O'Neil, LCDR, US Coast Guard
• Kathy Metcalf, Director, Maritime Affairs, Chamber of Shipping of America
• Chris Wiley, Chairman, IMO Ballast Water Working Group
• James Weakley, President, Lake Carriers' Association
• Phyllis A Green, Superintendent, U. S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service
• Josh Waldmeir, VGP Enforcement Coordinator, US Environmental Protection Agency.

In the interest of balance we'll also have speakers from Royal Caribbean Cruises, Canada Steamship Lines, Matson Navigation Company, Class NK, Wärtsilä, Hyde Marine, International Paint, Severn Trent de Nora and the Columbia Group to ensure the all sides of debate are represented and all of the most contentious issues are addressed in an informed manner.

Regardless of the IMO's ratification, what is certain is that the penalties for non-compliance in US waters will be severe, and that waiting too long to fit an effective BWM system may, ultimately, prove to be the wrong option.

Reserve your place today, visit our website here or email our delegate team on [email protected]

Join us in Houston for two days informed discussion designed to provide you with detailed answers and some clarity about how best to plan your phased introduction of BWM technology.
