WMI’s 2016/2017 Schedule is Live!

The 2015/2016 academic year at Western Maritime Institute is coming to an end and we’re down to our last few spring courses. We’re excited about what the next academic year has in store. Congratulations to all

Course registration is now available on our website and we are looking forward to having another very busy year with a campus full of activity. In the 2016/2017 academic year, we will be offering:

STCW MED Refreshers – Due to unforeseen circumstances, we have not been able to schedule out MED Refresher courses in the Spring and Summer as we had originally anticipated. We are now projecting to start running those courses in the Fall and the course schedule can be found on our website.

Bridge Watch Rating program

Master Limited (60 Tons)

Master, 150GT Domestic

Watch Keeping Mate – Near Coastal

Mate and Master, 500GT Domestic

We will also offer Marine Emergency Duties courses spread throughout the year as well as a variety of fishing vessel courses from the new Small Vessel Operator Certificate and modules to the Fishing Master 4 and Fishing Master 3 Certificates of Competency at our Ladysmith campus on Vancouver Island.

Now is a good time to enroll in courses starting in September! Here’s a handy to-do list for registration:

Have a Seafarer’s Medical done to ensure that you are physically able to undertake employment in the marine industry. To find a Transport Canada approved examiner in your area, log on to https://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/saf-sec-sur/4/ ... ers/search
Get your Candidate Document Number (CDN) from Transport Canada
Go to our website and register for the courses you need. Once you register, you’ll get a call from one of our Admissions and Career Advisor within one business day and you’ll be taken through the payment process.
Pay your deposit: to secure your spot you will need to pay a non-refundable deposit. The deposit is $250 if you’re registering for a full program and $250 per course (to a maximum of $1000) if you’re registering for portions of a program.

We look forward to welcoming you to our campus as you start or further your marine career.

Master 500GT, Domestic Certificate of Competency

Western Maritime Institute is now fully accredited by Transport Canada to offer the Master, 500GT, domestic certificate. Thanks to the success of the 2015/2016 cohort of students on the Transport Canada exams, future students can now enroll in a fully accredited 500 Tons Master certificate at WMI. This means that the next time you take a Ship Management Level 2 and/or Engineering Knowledge Level 1 course at WMI, you will be writing the WMI exam at the end of these courses. For more information on the Master, 500GT, Domestic Certificate of Competency, log on to http://www.maritimeed.com/master-500gt-domestic/.

Here we Grow Again!

If you haven’t been at the Ladysmith campus in the past two months, then you haven’t seen the transformation that’s taking place in the WMI gym, future home of WMI’s Transas Bridge Simulator and Marine Engineering programs. With this addition, WMI will be the only marine college in western Canada offering a full Engine Room Rating Certificate!

Once installed, the new Bridge Simulator will allow our Watchkeeping Mate, Near Coastal and Master, 500GT students to complete their Simulated Electronic Navigation courses at WMI.

Martin Leduc at The Monitor visited our campus and wrote a great article about the transformations taking place at WMI as we seek to provide more options for accelerated marine training on Vancouver Island and beyond.

Stay tuned for announcements on an Open House and unveiling of the finished project.

Funding Options

Canada-BC Jobs Grant

The Canada-BC Job Grant is “an employer-driven, cost-sharing program that helps employers invest in training for their current or future employees”. The 2016 round of funding is now available for training that starts on or before September 30, 2016.The grant helps employers offset the cost of training up to a maximum of $10,000 per employee per year. The employer is required to contribute at least 1/3 of the cost of the training and to have a job for the employee at the end of the training. The employer will need to pay for the full training cost up front and then apply to have the government portion repaid once the employee has been placed in a job. More information about the program as well as the application forms can be found at: https://www.workbc.ca/Employer-Resource ... Grant.aspx or call our Admissions Office for more information.

It would be nice to see them doing Engineering Courses to upgrade your ticket.

Absolutely. I will be on of the first to sign up when it does.

I visit with Capt. Kitching with some regularity and I am on their Program Advisory Board. Capt Kitching's plans to initiate a full engineering program is part of his vision, which is what the new owners are still following. They are just putting the final touches on a major capital project, re purposing one of the buildings, which the lower floors is already dedicated to engineering programs. See my blog for further insight http://www.dieselduck.info/blog/2016/03 ... ode-again/. At this time they do offer the SVMO on a regular basis.

The biggest challenge to this vision is of course, foot dragging and inconsistency from the regulator (TC), which makes it very difficult and expensive to constantly develop, redevelop programs, then redo it again, at their every whim. However this private institution is ready and nimble with its sole focus to train a very targeted audience - seafarers - that's all they do. Whereas most provincial institutions are bogged down with ivory towers mentality and heavy bureaucracy. In my view you will not find a more marine centered training environment, solely focusing on your professional seafaring needs, and I am happy to assist them wherever I can.

Well that's great to see that they are moving forward with it. I'm sure there will be a lot of people interested in courses offered on the island.

Is there a time frame they are trying to shoot for?

I gonna venture a guess, two to three years from now, but this a complete guess by me. I guess it would all depend on motivation. And that's very hard to come by with TC's attitude.

I would say it does sometimes feel like that.

I am not sure if there is a master plan, or what the end game is, but it just seems like they are really making every effort to keep us in the dark ages as professional seafarers. If they feel "overwhelmed" with the certification file, delegate the responsibility to class like they did over ship safety.
