Interesting Shipping Conferences: 2016 – 2017 Calendar

We know that a lot of you have already participated in interesting shipping conferences and you are aware about the opportunities they offer to hear new things about our industry and be connected with each other. On the other hand, by working hard on your daily tasks it becomes really difficult to get informed about new conferences. Since we understand this difficulty, we have found some of the most interesting conferences in the dry bulk and tanker shipping and we present them here for your easy reference. For your convenience, we've compiled calendar file which you can find at the end of the article.

16th China International Steel and Raw Materials Conference
21-23 September 2016, China

China is the major importer of iron ore and coal in the world and the most important player in the dry bulk market. Therefore, such a conference attracts the interest of major players in the dry bulk commodities and shipping industry. The conference is taking place between 21 and 23 September 2016 at Shangri-La Hotel, Dalian, China. Some of the topics to be discussed in this conference are related with the outlook of the Chinese economy, the prospects of the iron ore and steel industries, the performance of major steel mills and their raw material procurement strategy and the outlook of the dry bulk shipping markets and freight forecasts. The participation cost is set at USD 2,500 while the early bid is not available any more.

Breakbulk Americas
26-29 September 2016, Houston

Breakbulk Americas is the conference where you will meet executives from leading EPCs and other large-scale shippers who are moving their cargoes throughout the Americas and worldwide. Exhibitors and sponsors include specialized shipping companies, freight forwarders, ports & terminals, logistics providers, road, rail, barge and air transportation, marine equipment companies and more. The conference is taking place between 26 and 29 September in Houston and the registration fees are set at $350 with a $25 discount for registration until the 25th September. However the participation in the several workshops is optional and the cost ranges between $300 and $1,800 payable for each workshop separately.

“What’s On The Horizon? Tanker, Dry Cargo and Future Market Trends” – ASBA 14th Annual Cargo Conference
28-30 September 2016, Florida

ASBA is a reputable independent membership trade association, established in 1934 with members the Ship Brokers, Agents and Affiliates with offices in the United States and Canada. This 14th annual cargo conference of ASBA will take place during 28-30 September 2016 in Eden Roc Hotel in Miami Beach, Florida. Leaders in the shipping industry from major companies like D’Amico Group, Eagle Bulk Shipping, Cargill, ADM, Navig8, Louis Dreyfus will speak and share their views on market trends in the tanker and dry bulk shipping sectors. Delegates will enjoy presentations on main cargoes that include Petcoke, Steel Raw Materials, Concentrates and Rice. This year’s discussion panels will explore the Tanker Market, the Maritime Services and Supply Chain Partnerships, the latest developments on the Legal Issues faced by shipbrokers and agents and Counter Party Risk, as well as the Market Trends in shipping and main commodities. The participation cost is USD 1,195 for non-ASBA members and USD 200 less for its members while special prices are also offered for hotel accommodation.

Shortsea European Conference 2016
29-30 September 2016, Barcelona

This year’s Shortsea European Conference is taking place in Barcelona during 29-30 September 2016. During this conference will be analyzed the various shortsea shipping European markets and the shortsea shipping demand and will be discussed the European Transport policy and its financing as well as the Shortsea Shipping and Environmental Regulation. The key speakers are either CEOs or Directors of major companies like Grimaldi Group, Neptune Lines, Transmediterranea, Suardiaz and Brittany Ferries or key persons of port authorities and governmental organizations. The regular conference fee is Euro 425 and also includes coffee breaks, two lunches and a maritime tour.

Seatrade Maritime Middle East 2016
31 October – 2 November 2016, Dubai

It is considered as the main maritime event of the Middle East. It is actually an exhibition which attracts more than 7,000 attendees from almost 69 different countries who use this event to connect and do business with shipowners, operators, ship managers, charterers, superintendents, senior management and anyone involved with equipment and services within the maritime, offshore, oil & gas and ports industries. It is taking place between the 31 October and 2 November 2016 in the International Convention and Exhibition Centre of Dubai. The registration and visit is free of charge. During the exhibition, the 61st ISSA Convention and Trade Exhibition 2016 is taking place and the participation cost is $1,200 for non-ISSA members or $1,000 for ISSA members. Some of the issues which will be discussed during this conference are related with the hot issue of the cyber-attacks in shipping business and how to deal with them, the new vessel tracking system of Lloyd’s List Intelligence and the new technology developments and its effects in the ship to shore connectivity. Another two conferences are offered free of charge: The Seatrade Tanker Middle East 2016 is taking place in the morning of 2nd November and will provide a discussion on the market fundamentals of the tanker market, analyzing the supply growth, and the factors influencing demand, with an emphasis on the Middle East region and the outlook for its principal players. It is worth to note that this is organized in association with INTERTANKO – the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners. Two Technical Forums which are organised in association with the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST) UAE Branch, follow later in the afternoon. The first one is related with environmental issues while the second one with the vessels’ crewing.

Eisbeinessen 2016
3-4 November 2016, Hamburg

The traditional Eisbeinessen has been organised annually since 1948 by the Hamburg Shipbrokers´ Association. This event takes place every year on the first Friday in November, at the Congress Centrum Hamburg, it is a private event where only members of the Hamburg Shipbrokers’ Association have the opportunity to book their tables and it has become an international meeting platform for shipbrokers, shipping agents, shipowners, financiers, forwarding agents, ports & terminals who are directly or indirectly associated with shipping. The event is attended by more than 5,000 people worldwide.

Global Grain Geneva 2016
8-10 November 2016, Geneva

Grain is the third major dry bulk commodity after the Iron ore and coal. Global Grain Geneva is one of the most reputable grain conferences worldwide which in 2015 welcomed more than 1,200 delegates from 65 countries. It is taking place during 8 and 10 November 2016 in the InterContinental Hotel of Geneva, Switzerland and a lot of interesting issues of the agricultural market will be discussed including the global grain and oilseeds outlook, the impacts of the economic environment in the agricultural industry, the competitiveness of the Black Sea grain market and the recent developments in the ocean freight market with its risks and opportunities for grain buyers. The participation cost for attending both the briefing and conference stands at £1,699 + VAT for 1 participant with £100 discount for the 2nd and £500 discount for the 3rd one as well as £700 discount for any subsequent participant. For registration until 16 September there is a discount of another £100 on above rates.

Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference
15-16 November 2016, London

The third Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference will be organized in London between 15 & 16 November 2016. The 1st day is focused on chemical and product tankers and the second day of the conference on the crude tankers. During the conference will be discussed: Regulatory issues in the tanker industry, vetting issues and the relationship between the Owner and the Charterer, safety issues, technical topics such as the best practice in tank coating and cleaning and STS transfer. Leaders of the industry will speak in this conference such as the Vice President Chartering and Commercial Operations of BP Shipping, the business director of DNV, the Director of OCIMF, the CEO of Concordia Maritime and the Regional Operations Manager of Navig8 Chemicals. Also the Director of DYNAMARINe who specializes in STS transfer operations, the Global Director of Jotun and other leaders in this industry. The standard delegate cost for participating in the conference is £1,300 + VAT with a £100 discount for early bid registration latest by the 30th September.

35th Annual World Trade and Transport Conference
22-24 February 2017, New Orleans

The 35th Annual World Trade & Transport Conference will take place on February 22 - 24, 2017 at the Omni Royal Orleans in the New Orleans French Quarter. In the conference participate commodity producers and traders, freight forwarders, chartering ship brokers, shipowners and operators, stevedores, maritime attorneys, cargo and marine surveyors etc. while issues around the recent economic outlook, the main commodities of coal & coke, fertilizers, grains and steel as well as the developments around the Lower River and Upper River will be discussed.

Sea Asia – 6th Edition
25-27 April 2017, Singapore

Sea Asia is a maritime and offshore conference and exhibition in Asia, which is organizing its 6th edition between the 25th and the 27th April 2017 at the Marina Bay Sands, Singapore. It is co-organised by Seatrade and the Singapore Maritime Foundation and it is well-attended by trade and maritime professionals. As the major event held in conjunction with the Singapore Maritime Week, the Sea Asia conference enjoys strong support from governments and major trade associations, firmly establishing itself in the market as a major platform for both the global and local maritime community to explore business, network and unveil new products and services. During the 3 days conference a lot of interesting issues will be discussed which are related with the outlook in the shipping markets, the shipping finance, the smart shipping and other new technologies as well as the challenges for ship operators and the offshore sector. Speakers in this conference will be leaders in the shipping industry such as the CEO of Euronav, the Director, Research & Technology of Rolls-Royce plc, the CEO of Elektrans Group, the Managing Director of Precious Shipping PCL as well as the Chairman of the Hong Kong Shipowner’s Association.

Dry Cargo Conference & Exhibition
1-2 June 2017, Amsterdam

Dry Cargo Conference & Exhibition covers the whole supply chain of all major dry bulk commodities. It's a meeting place for shipowners, charterers, ship operators, miners, shipping agents, traders, shipbrokers, ports & terminals and logistics providers. It will take place in Amsterdam between 1 and 2 June 2017 and its programme focuses on the latest issues in the dry bulk trade, the balances between supply and demand as well as issues around ports & terminals and shipping finance & insurance. It seems that the programme and the registration of the 2017 conference has not yet opened however, to take an idea, the cost of the 2015 conference was Euro 695 for one day ticket or Euro 995 for the two days ticket.

London International Shipping Week Conference 2017
11-15 September 2017, London

London International Shipping Week is organized from 11 to 15 September 2017 by Shipping Innovation – a joint venture between Elaborate Communications and Petrospot – in association with The Baltic Exchange, the Department for Transport, Maritime London, Maritime UK, the UK Chamber of Shipping, UK Major Ports Group, and TheCityUK, the independent promotional body for UK financial and professional services. London International Shipping Week is attended by professionals from all the shipping sectors: Shipowners, Charterers, Operators, Shipbrokers, Lawyers, bunker suppliers etc. The major event of the week is the one-day LISW Conference which is going to take place on the 17th September 2017. High level government and industry speakers will give their views and opinions on the recent challenges and opportunities facing the maritime industry. Participation cost is £495 while the early bid for registration latest by January 2017 is £395. An additional cost of £265 is required for participation in the Champagne Reception & Gala Dinner.
