Invitation to Participate: Occupational Health and Safety Management on Canadian Vessels on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River
Published on August 1, 2017

This study is about occupational health and safety management on Canadian ships on the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway, and workers’ compensation issues among Canadian seafarers. Shipping on the Great Lakes and St-Lawrence River makes a vital contribution to regional economic prosperity. To promote the sustainable and healthy development of shipping in this region, we would like to talk to people knowledgeable about how health and safety, injury compensation and return to work operate on Canadian vessels in this region.

If you work in the Great lakes and St. Lawrence River shipping sector, we invite you to share your experiences and thoughts with us on maritime safety topics including hazards, risk reduction and management of risk, work-related injuries and illnesses, access to compensation and return to work. You will be given an opportunity to provide us with suggestions about what works well in health and safety on these vessels and about possible ways to improve legislation, policy and practices in the fleet.

This is an independent study undertaken by researchers from the Canada Research Chair on Occupational Health and Safety Law, University of Ottawa and Memorial University. It is funded by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council through the On the Move Partnership (http://www.onthemovepartnership.ca).

Contacted Dr. Shan and was interviewed this morning
She would like to talk with anyone of any rank or position, with experience working on the Lakes on any kind of vessel. Her questions are primarily about the perception of the person being interviewed on how the rules and regulations with respect to Occupational Health & Safety are working or not working, how the system is managed on the ship and by Management, about any experiences one may have had dealing with the system. The questions are based on the person's level of experience & knowledge.
