Joe Spears, Horseshoe Bay Marine Group
The Arctic Ocean Basin is rapidly changing and there is renewed interest in the Arctic and it resources. Many commentators have called it the new “Cold War”. This presentation will examine the opportunity this presents for Canada, one of the world’s largest costal nations. The marine industry will take on critical importance in a changing world that is beginning to see the effects of climate change. This paper and PowerPoint presentation will examine the Canadian Arctic and how Canada needs to seize this opportunity and assume a leadership role in the Arctic. To do that Canada’s needs the capability and capacity in its marine industries. One approach to how to achieve that and maximize the benefits to Canada in the changing Arctic will be explored.

1015 – 11:30 Challenges to Potential Shipping Systems In The Arctic,

Dermot Loughnane, Tactical Marine Solutions Ltd.

This presentation will examine the challenges to commercial shipping in developing new systems in the Arctic. It will describe some of the constraints to new systems such as the ice conditions, limited draft at Arctic ports, the limited season for some northern areas, the great distances to discharge ports and the economic challenges of operating very high iceclass ships. It will also discuss the methodology that has been used to examine such systems in previous Arctic shipping projects for oil, gas and mining projects.

The presenter will cover this topic by using the Victoria Class (formerly Type 2400 Upholder Class) as the baseline for discussion on the relative importance of design considerations. As with most marine naval architecture and engineering designs, the “art of the compromise” will be a common theme throughout the presentation. The presenter will familiarize the audience with the requirements for watertight integrity, stability, manoeuvring and propulsion, submarine escape and rescue, auxiliary systems, operations and through life support.
