2010 May - Intl' Tug and Salvage Conference in Vancouver

Post by The Dieselduck »

Now in its 42nd year, the International Tug & Salvage Convention returns to beautiful British Columbia after an absence of 37 years. When the 3rd Convention was held in Vancouver in May 1973, it welcomed 227 delegates from 22 countries and 16 exhibitors. This, the 21st Convention, will see an anticipated 400 delegates from approximately 50 countries and up to 100 exhibitors – a huge increase all round, reflecting the extraordinary and on-going success of the event.

Not only is Vancouver one of the world’s most beautiful ports, it is also home to some of the world’s leading naval architects in the field of tug design. It is estimated that nearly 400 tugs operate out of Vancouver and associated ports along the coast of British Columbia.

ITS 2010 will take place at the excellent five star Westin Bayshore Hotel and Conference Centre, which is located on the waterfront in the heart of downtown Vancouver. The facilities are elegant and spacious and the Bayshore Grand Ballroom is the largest hotel ballroom in western Canada. Wireless internet access is offered in all the hotel’s public spaces. It is only a short walk to the business district, restaurants, shopping and the beautiful 1,000-acre Stanley Park. Vancouver International Airport is only nine miles away. However, one of the prime reasons for the Westin Bayshore being selected was the fact that the entire Convention could take place under one roof. Over the years, the ITS Convention has earned an enviable reputation for being the best of its kind, thanks to meticulous attention to detail. It attracts the senior players in the business from all over the world, affording them a unique opportunity once every two years to meet, learn and do business – a lot of business. To this end, we go to great lengths to make sure that delegates and exhibitors have every available opportunity to network. The coffee/tea breaks take place within the exhibition and exhibitors can take lunch with the delegates.

Conference

The programme this year comprises an unprecedented 33 papers, selected and approved by the ITS 2010 Steering Committee. They cover a broad range of topics examining key areas of interest and concern in the tug and salvage industries, from towage liabilities and the re-training of crews to operate the latest vessels, to environmental salvage and underwater survey methods.

Following on from the highly successful ‘Green Wednesday’ at ITS 2008 in Singapore, we have five papers on the latest green tug developments, while running parallel to that session will be papers on a highly topical subject from the world of salvage – that of co-operation in a crisis. The Inaugural Paper will be presented by the newly appointed President and CEO of Port Metro Vancouver, Robin Silvester.

Our Conventions are always notable for their ground-breaking papers on technical and tug design matters, and this year will be no exception. Koen Fonk and Wilco van der Linden of Wärtsilä, for example, will be talking about Innovation in Tug Design, and Johan de Jong will be updating us on MARIN’s Safetug II Project.

A fascinating video, The Chain, initiated by the European Harbour Masters’ Committee (EHMC), will run during the lunch breaks at the Convention. The production underlines the EHMC’s belief that safety, efficiency and emissions in the nautical chain can be improved by better co-operation and the sharing of information and knowledge among all parties involved.

As always, emphasis will be not only on the papers themselves but on the audience discussions afterwards. To that end, the papers will be available online to registered delegates three weeks before the event, so questions can be prepared in advance. Some papers covering related topics will be followed by an extended discussion period after all have been delivered – a format which worked exceptionally well at Tugnology '09 in Amsterdam.

Yes I imagine it was quite show that I would have like to have gone too. Alas, my non existent budget did not allow for this, and my company is so busy "putting out fires" in a daily basis that they don't have any coin to pony up for these types of "frivolous" events.

Glad you had a great time, would love to see some pics... if you had any, especially of the new RAL BRAtt... ?
