About CMAC

The Canadian Marine Advisory Council (CMAC) is Transport Canada's national consultative body for marine matters. Meetings are normally held twice a year in the spring and fall, both nationally in Ottawa and in each region. Members include representatives of individuals and parties that have a recognized interest in boating and shipping concerning safety, recreational matters, navigation, marine pollution and response and marine security.

Terms of Reference

Subjects discussed included:

* the development and acceptance of international conventions, regulations, codes, standards, and recommendations;
* the development and implementation of national statutes, regulations, codes, standards, recommendations and procedures;
operations and services; and,
* any other matters related to marine safety, marine services, marine pollution prevention and response, and marine security.

There are seven Standing Committees that discuss issues and topics relative to their area and make recommendations for consideration.

Standing Committee on Construction and Equipment - The Standing Committee on Construction and Equipment provides a forum for consultation and information sharing on life saving and fire equipment, focusing on such topics as load lines, hulls and structural and electrical requirements.

Standing Committee on the Environment - The Standing Committee on the Environment provides a forum for consultation and information sharing on such matters as pollution prevention, compensation and liabilities and oil spill response.

Standing Committee on Fishing Vessel Safety - The Standing Committee on Fishing Vessel Safety provides a forum for consultation and information sharing on the design, construction, operation and crewing of Fishing Vessels.

Standing Committee on Marine Security - The Standing Committee on Marine Security provides a forum for consultation and information sharing on initiatives that enhance the security of the marine transportation system.

Standing Committee on Navigation and Operations - The Standing Committee on Navigation and Operations provides a forum for consultation and information sharing on such matters as navigation safety and equipment, marine communications, aids to navigation, marine services and safe carriage of cargoes.

Standing Committee on Personnel - The Standing Committee on Personnel provides a forum for consultation and information sharing on such matters as crewing and certification, training and medical examinations.

Standing Committee on Recreational Boating - The Standing Committee on Recreational Boating provides a forum for consultation and information sharing on issues related to recreational boating.
