• New 2nd class motor question

I recently wrote the 2nd class motor exam and came accross one of the new questions.

"Describe a gas turbine powered water jet propulsion system. How is the
shaft speed of the turbine reduced to that required by the water jet
impeller? What are the advantages of this system over that of a
conventional propulsion system?"

Hope this helps out anybody prepping for their 2nds.

Thanks for the info Swailfish. Isn't it nice to see that Transport Canada is keeping up with the times? The best info I have found so far are on the websites for Rolls-Royce, Wartsila and Ultradynamics.

OK, where would you ever see a gas turbine with a water jet other then a warship? Who could afford to run it?
Must be the influence of all those DND Double Dippers in TC

Fast ferries JK. One notable example is the Victoria Clipper that runs catamarans from Washington State to Vancouver Island. Water jets are now being manufactured with powers in excess of 20 MW for civilan applications.

The fast ferry boys are sorry they bought the gas turbine now, the price of fuel.
Stena run a few catamarans, around 40 knot boat, with 4 gas turbines, in a Father and Son arrangement.
