Marine Machinery System

Post by greenerygao »

hello, everybody. I have just jumped into the offshore industry as a mechanical engineer with no marine experience at all. However, the offshore platform has many similiarities with ship.

I would like to start from scratch with the ship machinery system. Could anyone show me some good books or video courses about the machinery system principles and design such as fuel oil system, lub oil system, cooling water system, exhaust system, starting air system and ship common systems? If DNV rules are incorporated, it would be perfect. Thanks.

A good series of books is the "Marine Engineering Practice" series, published by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology (IMarEST) http://www.imarest.org/

These are small, and relatively cheap, with each book in the series covering all areas of particular subject. They will allow you to buy only the books which cover the areas you are interested in.

Many of the other books are more expensive and will cover items which you will have no interest in.

The Reeds series of marine engineering books http://www.acblack.com/catalogue/catego ... ory_id=128 are another good source, but can be a little generic.

A couple of years ago I came across a book that I thought was quite good, its called "Ship Knowledge
Ship Design, Construction and Operation" by Klaas van Dokkum.

I am a visual person (I like lots of pictures) and this book certainly had a tremendous amount of illustrations and description to satisfy just about all your curiosity of a ship. Its not super in depth, but it certainly cover a huge amount of ships particulars in great format, and most importantly, current. Plus the price appeals to my cheap side being less than a 100 bucks at the time I bought it, if I remember correctly. In a world where even a copy of the regulations is well over several hundred dollars, I found this book a great value.

You can order from online at http://www.dokmar.com/?p=2
