Strainers

Post by JK »

This is what happens to sump strainers when you are not vigilant to your hydraulic system .
This was fitted on a small ring main that had green hydraulic oil in it.
Naturally the system was not running well at all.

When was the last change/cleaning? Looks like it had not been looked at for a very long time. How is the rest of the system?

I can't get the exact details, these are older pictures, but the opinion is about 2 years between the green oil being commissioned to when the system was checked for operating issues. The green oil had been put in for test purposes.
That is about all I can find out about it, as people have moved on and I was not involved.
The thing is that strainer stank, I mean really stank. It was double bagged in a 5 gallon can and it just about blew our socks off when it was taken it out for the pictures.

Sounds like either you got water in the system or the system wasn't completely drained of the mineral oil and there was a compatibility problem and you started growing a very strong batch of bacteria or algae.
Hope it wasn't on any critical system like a steering or CP system

I do know that the system was flushed before the new oil was put in,The thing about this particular oil was that it changed viscosity as the temperature changed.
It was in a main that support deck equipment and a crane on a smaller boat.
The system had started to run hot and the ports and reliefs began getting blocked, which caused a worse heat problem and worse blockage. The whole system was a mess when it was opened up.

Water contamination is a really good possibility.
