Air Compressor Problem

After a major overhaul of a Hamworthy T2F5 reciprocating 2 stage air compressor there was an issue with water in the crank case oil as well as oil being found coming out the inter-cooler drain between the LP & the HP stages.
All the valves with the exception of the LP Suction valve were covered with oil residue.
All the seals for the inter-coolers and the cylinder head was replaced and the problem still remained.
Any idea what the problem is?

A hint
It has something to do with the piston rings

Oil ring was in upside down.

Close, The compressor was opened again and the cylinders were found to be highly polished almost to a mirror finish. After honing the liners and the compressor was reassembled the rings were able to seat in properly and the problem disappeared

Excellent post. Thank you for taking the time.

I never realized how shy marine engineers were of posting opinions and experiences until we started doing these type posts.
The number of people that read and will not post their experiences for the fellows just starting out is amazing.
