Ya on start up the smoke just floats right out of those joints. Seals up quite a bit when they've heated up. Nothing coming out of the heads. We tow a log barge up and down the coast, mostly in the inside of Vancouver Island. Up to Bella Bella/Bella Coola to Vancouver. Ya the deck hands do the cooking on the tug. What type of a ship are you on?

Not permanently on a ship, do a bit of relief work but mostly workshop bound and bit of troubleshooting travelling abroad to ships.
Did a five year apprenticeship in 1960-65 in marine engineering and stayed in it ever since. ( see my earlier postings of those early years )
There must be a lot of money in logs the amount of steaming you do in those high latitudes I see from AIS.
Gone from the bearing scraper era to CR era plus and still learning every day.
Bit late to change now.

Right on. Ya there is definitely money in logs. Especially log barges. We get paid per m3, and the barge holds between 7500-9400m3, depending on the species.

Well that's a different way to earn a living going to at sea.
Just thought about those three thousand series engines and seem to remember long time back some firm brought out a non Cat turbo to exhaust joint kit which was actually designed to snort out exhaust gas upon start up and heat seal itself when it got hot.
Could'nt ever see the point of it and remember Cat sent out a circular condemning it outright on the obvious basis that no exhaust should ever at any time exhaust any fumes into the engine room.
ie, gas tight at all times

Ya it's pretty bad that the company doesn't care to fix it. Ya that does sound about right. Ya, there shouldn't be any exhaust in the engine room.

If there is exhaust gas in the engine room, call a Marine Safety Inspector to do a MOSH inspection under the Canada Labour Code, part 2. That's a much bigger stick than even Port State Control.

And all over a couple of joints/seals. A few bucks . Find it amazing.
All the fuss over here re exhaust emissions and lower and lower permissible readings makes it surreal.
All that fog in the engineroom would be an immediate prohibition notice issue.

Ya, not sure how to go about that without getting fired over saying something to transport Canada.

It's called over here " putting the bubble in "
My suggestion, out with the boot polish, black the face when you know the boss/ owner is due a visit and present yourself to him in a nonchalant way.
And hope he doesn't think it's a suntan because you spend too much time on deck
Just a thought.
Best of luck.

No Union?

Pretty sure you can do anonymous calls. Not sure where to though. .

Ya it's not much of a union. It was created just so the company could work with other union companies. An anonymous call wouldn't work because there are only two engineers that work on this tug that complain about it. It'd be one of us.

Somewhat of a delicate situation, got any diving gear onboard?
Greet the owner with an air bottle on your back.
Ask for a compressor to pump the bottle up?
It's called dropping hints.
Slacken the turbo to exhaust piping bolts so it makes it unusable and get the skipper down there for a face full.
All stop.
Then it's a "told you so jobby "

Bet they are backed off as we speak?
Can't see the smoke and all stop on the IAS yet?
Sunday roast first maybe.
