I had this picture sent to me to get one of the pipes renewed. I was scanning through the shots quickly and had to stop to see this one in all it's glory.
Shipyard work BTW.

Re: What do You See?
I see that the beam has been compromised to make room for the pipe.

I too see the cut in the angle iron, and at the bottom of the picture the pipes seem very tight to what ever they are crossing under.

Re: What do You See?
I see flanges cut like this fairly often, which of course doesn't help the strength of the member.
But, to make matters worse it is a crooked notch, not a smooth arc.
Then you just have the fact that the vent pipe has been fabricated an inch short before the bend, which put it in way of the flange...or maybe someone put the spud piece through the tank top in the wrong place, we'll never know.
And the lovely bubble gum weld.

Re: What do You See?
I see trouble. Two welds in the line and no apparent way to shut off whatever flows through this pipe for repair - double trouble. Think they should have bit the bullet and started again on this one. Any idea what the orange discoloration is??

They are both vent lines. I guess I forgot to mention that.

Class Surveyor will have a field day with this one
Never compromise the existing structure to route pipes!
Hack it out, repair the stiffener and start over!

Re: What do You See?
Hmmmmm, I see a doubler plate on the tanktop running along what is probably a longitudinal (that is bad)....but wait, also its weld is sharing the same dog doo doo weld of one of the vent pipes (that is bad). There is no reinforced plate in way of the tanktop where the vent pipes pass through, also.
