You can try, but I dont think you will retain any strengh, there are long 'spark plug' type on the market.

Or you could try these, I have a cheep set of ratchet spanners, very handy for tight spaces.

Re: Extending a chrome vanadium socket
Thanks Arkjumper, great ideas. I've emailed Northern to see what the internal length of the socket is..it needs to be 4.5 inches. The spanner would work but as it is a crankshaft nut..it should be torqued. The 36mm deep socket I have has an internal depth of 2.25 inches...sorry I wasn't clear about that.

If you are doing an engine job and need some sort of special tool, it should be part of the engines inventory. Have you checked with the engine manufacturer?

I have used an open ended spanner on a torque wrench also. special MAK tool. But I think they can be purchased in 'any good tool shop'

Re: Extending a chrome vanadium socket
Chrome Vanadium tools can be welded. Part it in a lathe with a narrow parting tool where the "splines" stop and the back end that accommodates the drive starts. Grind the chrome off the cut edges to form a 45 degree chamfer.
Now select a mild steel pipe of suitable diameter that the nut can fit inside, the length being long enough for your purpose.
Weld the mild steel pipe insert between the two socket pieces, properly lined up.
Make your own tube socket!!!
