VASILIOU, Basil Michael "Bill"

Post by JK »

Peacefully passed away at Elmsmere Villa on Thursday, January 14, 2016 at the age of 82 years. Predeceased by his wife Betty and son Michael. Uncle Bill will be dearly missed by his special niece Karen and family as well as nephew Stephen. He is survived by many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews, all living in Scotland.
Bill came to Canada in 1953 as a deck boy off a cargo ship, gained Canadian citizenship and went on to become a ship's captain, a Navigation Instructor at the Canadian Coast Guard College, an Examiner of Masters and Mates, Port Warden of Trois Rivières, Que., a senior marine accident investigator and an analyst of marine accidents for the Canadian Transportation Safety Board and editor of the magazine Marine Safety Reflexions (not bad for a mere deck boy!).
Bill lived life his way and could always laugh at himself. He was above all a proud and unhyphenated Canadian and remained forever grateful to Canada for the opportunities, privleges and responsibilities that came with his Canadian citizenship. The family offers a very special thank you to Dr. Tara Tucker for the support and guidance over the last year; we are most grateful. Bill spent the last few months living at Elmsmere Villa where he was surrounded by love and caring; it was a wonderful home away from home. A farewell gathering will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Ottawa Regional Cancer Center or the Elmsmere Villa, 889 Elmsmere Road, would be greatly appreciated. -
