Like so many of the older fellows, the obituaries miss much of the at sea career because the family are not aware of the sea going bits.

and in the small world of Canada shipping,I was leaning over the ships rail Wednesday with an engineer I had just met, chatting about ships we had been on. It turned out the engineer had sailed with Mr Ballard, back when he was in his early 20s and just starting out
This is over 40 years later on the opposite side of the country.
Small world indeed.
