Shared many a beers with Peter through the Vancouver Island Branch of the CIMarE, sad to read this, this morning. Rest in peace Peter, the alarms are no longer going off. - Martin

Peter E. Hammond (February 06, 1948 - December 25, 2017)

Just shy of his 70th birthday, Peter passed away peacefully in Victoria, surrounded by his loving family after a valiant battle with cancer. Born in San Francisco to Joan Thiele and Richard Schofield, he was raised on the island of Guam. From an early age, he was drawn to the sea, wanting more than anything to be a sailor and ply the waters of the world. He attended King's Point Merchant Marine Academy, graduating in 1970 with his BS in Mechanical/Marine Engineering.

Working on ocean-going ships allowed Peter to see many corners of the world, from Europe, to the Middle East, South America, and Asia. He formed lifelong friendships, ascended to rank of Chief Engineer, had a long tenure at American President Lines, and shepherded ships through both the Suez and the Panama Canals. He served as Director of the Marine Engineer Beneficial Association Training School from 1996-2000 and later taught technical classes at BCIT. He obtained his Canadian First Class license in 2008, holding it simultaneously with his American one, a rare feat, and put it to work at Point Hope Shipyard and BC Ferries. Towards the end of his career, he sailed as First Engineer on The Ocean Phoenix. The OP was one of his favourite vessels, a 60's era steamship that had been repurposed as a floating fish factory for work in the Bering Sea. With a crew hailing from many different nations, he loved the camaraderie and international flair of his crewmates and being first engineer instead of chief meant that he could spend the bulk of his time "fixing stuff" in the engine room.

But perhaps his greatest accomplishment of his career was the serendipitous meeting of his future wife and life partner Jane on a freighter bound for Japan. Jane and Peter married in March 1976 and they raised their 3 children in Metchosin. In 1994, Peter's career took the family on a 5 year sojourn to Sonoma, CA and Easton, MD. Upon their return to Victoria, Jane and Peter undertook a major construction project, dismantling the 1881 farmhouse board by board and replacing it with a new structure, our family home and current site of Glenrosa Farm Restaurant.

Peter was brilliant, well-read, quick-witted, and possessed an unparalleled mechanical aptitude. He relished good conversation, equally at home discussing intricate international political strategy and septic field best practices. He is survived by his father Dick (Harriette), siblings Decla, Chris, Bob, Susan and Crystal Ann, wife Jane, children, Allison (Kevin), Stuart (Maureen), and Gillian, and grandchildren Patrick and Victoria.

A celebration of Peter's remarkable life will be held on Saturday, April 7th at Glenrosa Farm in Metchosin. In lieu of flowers, donations to the BC Cancer Agency or local Red Cross would be appreciated.
