Captain AJ Rae Crosses the Bar

Post by JK »

If you used a Reids book for studying, you have this man to thank.

RAE, Captain Andrew J. L.L.D. (hon)
80, of Halifax, passed away on January 4, 2009. Born in Uphall, West Lothian, Scotland, he was the son of the late Andrew and Mary (Jack) Rae, (both of West Lothian, Scotland). He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Jean (Meek) Rae of Halifax; son, John (Judy) Rae of Sambro Head; son, Andrew (Karen) Rae of Bedford; daughter, Sandra (Robert) Pattison of Tantallon; son, George (Angela) Rae of Timberlea; and daughter, Jacqueline Rae of Timberlea. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Rachel, Andy, Matthew, Nathan, Jamie, Tara, Jared, Daniel, George Waldo, Sam, Emily, and Lindsay; great-grandchildren, Bailey, Amber, Kailyn and Caden. He will be sadly missed by his special granddog, Angus. Captain Andrew J. Rae graduated from George Herriot's School, Edinburgh, Scotland, and then went on to graduate from Leith Nautical College, Edinburgh, Scotland. He obtained his Master Mariner Certificate in 1956 and then immigrated to Canada that same year. He had enjoyed a successful career over the years. In the early 1960s, he founded Captain Andrew J. Rae and Sons Limited to provide adjustment and repair of magnetic compasses. He then went on to develop a self study curriculum for the 350 ton Master Certificate program for Prince Edward Island which led to a high grade certification for those pursuing careers in the P.E.I. ferry service, the Canadian Coast Guard, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and the Private Sector. Throughout the 1970s he developed a suite of training materials used by the marine colleges in Canada and 20 countries around the world. In the 1980s, the Halifax Shipyards used his Ship Construction for training tradespersons for drilling rig and ship construction. In the early 1980s, with the boom in the offshore exploration business in eastern Canada, he developed a distance education program, which is now fully interactive (CD-Internet) and used by seaman across the world. Over 8,000 have used the material over the past 25 years. Captain Rae had also enjoyed giving back to his community. He was a philanthropist with many youth programs in Nova Scotia and other community groups, including Street Connection, which is a soup kitchen for low income families in the HRM. His hard work and dedication to his industry and his community has not gone unnoticed. In 2007, he was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Civil Law from Saint Mary's University. Special thanks to Dr. Margaret Rowicka and the staff of the VG Site, QEII Palliative Care Unit. A memorial service, officiated by Rev. Ellen Wilson, will be held on Thursday, January 8, at 2 p.m. in the Gospel Hall, on the corner of North and Oxford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Canadian Cancer Society or to Street Connection. Condolences: www.altanticfuneralhomes.com
