When I walked into work this AM, the freshest news was that Halifax Shipyard had lost their Scotia Dock.
It was being sunk to lift a offshore vessel over the weekend, when it kept on going. The buzz is that it only took 20 minutes to go down.
That is a blow to the yard.
Always interesting news in the marine industry.

The Docking master must have just about died when he saw it go under.

It appears they attempted to refloat the dock on the weekend and it went back under.

I had a look up the narrows today and still no sign of the second dock afloat and the silence is deafening, of course the rumor mill is working OT.
OK JollyJack, 'fess up, have you heard anything?

Did you take a linguistic translator?
It appears the dock is- in non-engineering terms- Toast. When they tried to refloat it, it had a "wee" structural failure.
I am sure at some point in time it will come off the bottom in a flurry of air bubbles, what will happen after that, only the Irvings know for sure.

I used to live there, so I can say "pochmihone, spieroch" with the best of 'em!
I'm back on the mainland, but fog prevents me seeing the shipyard. You'll be able to see it here:

when the fog clears.

Re: Curious Case Of the Missing Dock
They pulled the dock out of it's slot last week.
I have been told that it is so damaged that it can't be inspected internally and that the pilot refused to participate in towing it out of the harbour. Speculation is that it will have to be dismantled onsite.
This must be causing problems for the yard. They have one of the CF supply ships there, it was just floated off the Nova dock, a frigate alongside, a supply ship on the marine railroad and the CG new build contract starting.
It could have been much worse though, no one lost their life in this drawn out saga!

I am sure the other yards are rubbing their collective hands in glee over this misfortune for Halifax Shipyards, with the new government fleet build contract announcement (hopefully) soon.
