Staff ~ The Cape Breton Post SYDNEY — Marine Atlantic announced today at a press conference in St. John’s that it will charter two new vessels to replace the MV Caribou, and MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood.
The vessels are scheduled to go into service next summer.

Rob Merrifield, Minister of State for Transport, Rob Crosbie, chair of Marine Atlantic board of directors, and Wayne Follett, president and chief executive officer of MAI, made the announcement that an agreement was reached with Stena Group of Companies to charter the vessels. The vessels are intended to improve Marine Atlantic’s ability to provide on-time, reliable service and meet increasing traffic demand between North Sydney, and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Cape Breton reporters were invited to view a webcast of the announcement from Marine Atlantic North Sydney terminal today, but would not be able to ask questions during the event. Instead, Marine Atlantic was to arrange for later interviews. The webcast failed, however, so members of the media left.

Marine Atlantic Inc. is a federal Crown corporation that reports to Parliament through the Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities. The Corporation provides a constitutionally mandated passenger and commercial marine transportation system between the Island of Newfoundland and the Province of Nova Scotia. Its mission is to provide a safe, environmentally responsible and quality ferry service in a reliable and cost-effective manner.

(Then there is BCFC, that receives public funding and whines about being required to respond to ATIPs and the costs of doing so. The same country, two different ways of running a ferry company!)
