I hope that they are not like the last yard I went to that had come out of bankruptcy, their machine shop was pitifully empty.

upperlakes group is a vary big group, they own 2 outher ship yards, and electrical repair company and a maintence company, from the sounds from the local news paper the outher day, Seaway Marine and Industrial (port weller drydocks) will buld the ships in sections then they will be shiped to davies to be assembled, its a win-win set up, it will be mass employment at seaway marine and at davies

Quebec and Ontario are rich in potential seats for the Conservative/Reform Alliance Party, Nova Scotia and BC are not. The contract is tailored for central and upper Canada. While both NS and Quebec are good at whining for Federal money, Quebec is better at it, has more political clout, more leverage and has much more experience than either NS or BC. Ontario, the centre of the Universe, is entitled to it.

That the contract is going there is a foregone conclusion.

It appears the Davie bid is for the the smaller of the two contracts, for support craft. (tow trucks, snow ploughs and the like for CCG, to keep the port of Montreal open in the winter, auxiliary vessels for DND) The major one, for warships, is still open to Halifax and Vancouver.

Fabricators eager for news on shipbuilding contracts

SAINT JOHN - New Brunswick fabricators could capture a share of lucrative shipbuilding contracts that Ottawa is expected to award this fall as the financial windfall of the multi-billion-dollar projects ripple across the region.

The Port of Belledune has met with officials from both of the eastern bidders, Davie Yards in Lévis, Que., and Irving Shipbuilding in Halifax, and is optimistic the port would ship pre-fabricated components of the new vessels to either of the proponents, a port official said.

That would mean local fabricators would help build sections of some ships and take home a slice of the massive injection of funds Ottawa is expected to make with the contracts, said Tracy Eddy, director of engineering and property management with the Belledune Port Authority.

"We believe that one of (the eastern proponents) is definitely going to get something and whether it's the smaller contract, it's still huge, it's still something in the vicinity of $8 billion, so it's nothing to sneeze at," Eddy said. "They are going to need all of the support that they can find."

Davie Yards, Irving Shipbuilding and Seaspan Shipyards in Vancouver are competing for contracts worth more than $30 billion to build new fleets for the Canadian navy and Coast Guard. One yard will get the largest share of the work, $25 billion to build warships, while another will construct non-combat vessels, such as the polar ice breaker.

Odds are, at least one of the eastern bidders will receive a contract. Eddy said "it is very likely" New Brunswick fabricators and the Belledune port will capture a share of the work, regardless of where Ottawa assigns the contracts.

Mary Keith, spokeswoman for Irving Shipbuilding, declined to speculate about the impacts a successful bid would have on Belledune, while Davie Yards did not respond to requests for comment.

Carl Tremblay, operations manager with Saint John's Lorneville Mechanical Contractors, said the ships would likely be built in massive components. The big parts made outside of the winning yards would have to be shipped there by barge, something Saint John is not yet able to do.

Saint John Industrial Parks, a municipal corporation, wants to build a barge terminal on the city's west side near Lorneville by as early as next year, although the group still needs to secure government permits - and funds - before work can begin.

The estimated $6-million project would allow local fabricators to compete for large-scale industrial projects, such as the multi-billion-dollar nickel smelter under construction in Newfoundland and the Canadian navy and Coast Guard ships.

"The shipbuilding contract, if we were to have this capability of shipping, would help not only us but all the fabricators in this area," Tremblay said.

"It's a known fact in the industry that (the) Halifax shipyards can't handle it all."

In Bathurst, Maritime Welding general manager Danny Valley said discussions were still preliminary about the windfall his shop could reap under the shipbuilding contracts, but speculated it could be big.

He said his company's production volumes, already worth $5 million to $7 million a year, could increase by 40 to 50 per cent if the firm started shipping large modular components, for ships and other structures, through the Belledune port.

The port has a new fabrication shop and barge facility, and expects to have tenants operating there in the next few months.

Oh, Oh!!! This sounds familiar! Can anyone say CFI ? Change 'Davie's" to 'Catamaran Ferries International' and this all sounds horribly familiar :shock:. BC Ferries tried this once before - hopefully it will turn out better this time...
