News clip may be of some interest (surely to generate soooome discussion) of a submarine that needed to be depermed in order to "avoid detection".

For various reasons, the hull and equipment of a ship are affected by magnetic fields and tend to become 'impregnated' by the fields over time. For example when major steel-work is done on a ship, the magnetic compass needs to be re-adjusted to compensate for the change in magnetic signature of the hull. Imagine if you could do the opposite, in other words, leave the compass unchanged and de-magnetise the hull. That's basically what this site in the US is set up to do, as you can imagine the size and complexity of such an installation there are only a few in the world and are allies are gracious enough to let us use thier facilities. This has been done on a routine basis on all major warships for a very long time, just never really made public. Most major warships have a permanently fitted on-board de-gaussing system, but they are not as effective as sending the entire ship through a de-gaussing field. When I was serving on canadian frigates we used to really hate it when the de-gaussing system was on because our machinery monitoring and alarm panels were old CRTs back then and everything became blurred and the colors changed. It took longer to analyse the machinery status screens because instead of having white for normal, amber for caution and red for alarm everything was pink or purple.

The older ships I sailed on,had sections of de-gausing in place. Other sections removed piece by piece over time. Sebastien, you would know why. LOL
