The answer is, buy a Sulzer. For smaller, medium speed engines, get one which is designed to be run and maintained, a Detroit Diesel, up to EMD 645. Forget that over-engineered computerised crap and get a real engine.

First clue was a smoking engine.
I have to agree with you there JJ. The toughest smaller engine I have dealt with was Detroit Diesel 92 series 2 stroke. You couldn't kill them. We've taken them apart for maintenance and found bottom ends cracked, everything worn and the engines still kept going. Too bad they were so dirty.

Could not agree more JollyJack. Even in my limited experience (compared to you guys) it was easy to adopt that attitude. The photos remind of a marine engine we had shipped to us. Hole blown through the crankcase doors, piston skirt seizure, crown melted into popcorn.. good times. Also caused by a leaky injector if memory serves me correctly.

I miss sailing :(

Don't sell yourself short, we are just old.
I would be lost if I had to sail with the new technology on ships today.

That's why there are manualmatic over rides, electrickery WILL fail. :) Just a matter of time.

That looks expensive, ouch! What were you using this Volvo engine for? Lifeboat/workboat?

Propulsion on a small patrol boat. Sorry for the late response, just saw this.

Apparently Volvo seems to be having some Q&A issues with pistons. If you are installing new ones, check them over carefully. They are coming out of the wrapping with damages.
