passeger ferry corfu

Post by jimmys »

I see a greek passenger ferry burning off Corfu. Fire in the car deck 478 passengers on board. Boat deck so warm burning the passengers shoes. Wonder what is burning. Weather bad with high winds

Doesn't look good Jimmy. Didn't the car deck deluge system work? Do they even have a deluge system? I wonder how the Newfie ferries from Nova Scotia to Newfoundland would cope in similar circumstances, car deck fire, gale force winds in the North Atlantic and a MES deployed to evacuate passengers and crew.

More on the BBC News, one Dead, he jumped overboard to escape the Fire. Everyone is supposed to be evacuated before Dark today. Many survivors reported to be dehydrated and suffering from Hypothermia.

evidently no car deck drencher system. The larger uk ferries have the pre charged system air and water to set off and salt water pump to continue. need good scuppers to use at full load. three sections on larger car deck. A lot of water. High temperature to bubble deck paint. Two people said to have died in lifeboat escape system maybe MES. 10 died at latest. MES does not like winds.

I always wondered about the chute system.
It is appalling that these people couldn't get off the ship, yet at the same time amazing that the ship lasted long enough for them to be evacuated.

Evacuated by chopper, you'll note, not gravity davit lifeboats or MES chutes (where at least 1 person died)

Working a tug in foul weather is always dangerous, I've seen a 3" diameter steel wire snap like a guitar string, arc forward and cut the wheelhouse down the centreline. Nobody hurt, fortunately, but the mate on watch had to change his underwear!

Sounds shambolic, no reliable Passenger Manifests, nobody really knows how many People were on board.

No crew around to manage passengers, sounds Italian, anyway. Only difference from the Costa Concordia is that the Captain stayed on the bridge, he was last to leave apparently.

Apparently in the summer, passengers can stay on the car deck in their campers. Now tha t would have been a death trap.

That's hard to watch, smacks of brown envelopes, Johnny Walker and Marlborough.
