USS John S. McCain enroute to repair facility

$223 million for hull repairs!! you could do yearly maintenace and repair on a lot of ships with that money.

Money aside, the lifted ship has developed a crack. Is the initial damage such that the ship is setting or is the blocking not quite right, or maybe the heavy lift ship is flexing in rough weather. So many thoughts.

I read somewhere that each Class of Aegis Destroyer was longer than the previous Class, but no changes were made to the scantlings until they found that they were suffering from cracking due to a lack of Longitudinal strength, and then the later ones were stiffened, maybe it is related to that?
They were just lengthened by adding a length amidships without re calculating and re designing the Longitudinal framing to cope with the additional sheer stress and Bending moments.

That is simply criminal. There is no other description. Any N Arch that signed off on that should have the ring removed.

The N. Arch was probably told that if he couldn't insert a 20 foot length into the design within the Budget, there were plenty of others who could!
Maybe that is one of the reasons for the high cost, they will be fitting additional Longitudinals at the same time as the rest of the repairs?

If you were a Gov project MAnager responsible for the major conversion of 8 ships, would you not have you own nav archs look at some of the numbers?

Obviously not!!
As somebody once said," it is all about the money and only the money"
By the time the xxxx hits the fan, the Project manager will be far away.
A week is a long time in Politics.

Obviously JK you spent too long at Sea to have learned the art of being a bureaucrat, you bring the Project in on time and under budget and you leverage that to get a more Senior job elsewhere before anyone realises that only half the work originally specified in your project has actually been done, and keep repeating this until you are Chief Exec of a Fortune 100 Company or President of the Country. :D

Oh JK! I despair for you. Arm wrestling contractors is no way to get them to give you a highly paid zero hours consultancy contract for life when you retire, you just don't know how to play the game.
(Or maybe you just don't choose to play it)
