HMCS Kootenay Gearbox Explosion 50 year Anniv.

Post by JK »

It's 50 years since the HMCS Kootenay's starboard gearbox blew up, killing 9 , injuring 53 and causing a fireball that ripped through the engineroom and main alleyway. The explosion was cause by an improperly installed bearing that raised oil temperatures to 650*C.

No wonder I went gray so young doing ship repair, you were always conscious of the fact, peoples lives were dependent on decisions you took.
