Marine Operations Specialist
Methanex Corporation - Vancouver, BC
Full-time, Permanent

This position oversees day to day operations of Waterfront’s COA and Spot vessels, ensuring best utilization of Waterfront’s resources in the most economic and efficient way. In addition, this role supports the Marine Operations Coordinators with the operations of Waterfront’s fleet, as required.

Manage all administrative aspects of laytime claims including analysis and feedback regarding any discrepancies, freight payments, spot vessel approvals and present to Manager, Operations for final approval.

Assist Operations Manager in establishing operational standards and procedures, KPI evaluations and any other project assigned by the manager. The Marine Operations Specialist must work closely with the rest of the operations group and the Operations Manager to achieve our goals.

Position Responsibilities Spot Vessel Coordination:

Responsible for communicating directly with vessel brokers
Providing voyage instructions to vessel owner/master and ensuring required information and documentation is received
Ensure all freight and demurrage claims are received and processed
Communicate to regions globally on all spot/COA vessel activity
Support regional planning as required

Spot Vessel Approvals:

Collect all the relevant information necessary for vetting of ships and present recommendations to Manager for approval
Maintain database on approved/rejected vessels
Communicate with Commercial Department on issues relating to approval of vessels

Port Coordination:

Provide all relevant vessel information to loading master and ensure loading master is up to date on vessel movements
Provide all port documents to vessel master/owner

Laytime Claims:

Responsible for receiving incoming claims and ensuring all documents are received
Liaising with Marine Operations Analyst to provide laytime calculations against owner’s claim
Analyzing and confirming any demurrage against contract agreement and negotiating accordingly
Preparing regional proposals
Liaising with Commercial Department on COA contract renewals as it relates to laytime clauses

Disbursement Accounts:

Receives all freight invoices and documentation, verifies all information and submits reconciled invoices for approval

Other:

Provides assistance with analysis and other areas as requested
Proactively works with team to support operation of Waterfront’s fleet
Takes the lead on enhancing internal processes and procedures

Position Qualifications

Degree in relevant field
Minimum of 2 years’ experience in ship operations
Shipping business knowledge
Ability to interpret and operate with Contracts of Affreightment and Spot/voyage Contracts Experience with Time Charter contracts is considered an asset
Ability to understand international regulations, documentation and relevant maritime laws
Must have a very good understanding on how ships, ports and terminals operate
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, good administrative skills
Close attention to detail and accuracy
Must have good negotiating ability
Tank Cleaning process knowledge and application would be an asset
