Under the supervision of the Chief Engineer, Marine Engineers keep vessels running. They operate, monitor and maintain the correct operation of a ship's engines and associated machinery, including electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic pump, piping and fuel, air conditioning and refrigeration. Intrinsic to these tasks is the responsibility to ensure the safe and efficient operation of all equipment on board.

Training for Officer Cadets in Marine Engineering is divided into five phases:
1. Eleven months at the College
2. Four months at sea on a Coast Guard vessel
3. Sixteen months at the College
4. Five months at sea on a Coast Guard vessel
5. Nine months at the College

This is a rewarding, challenging, task-oriented job with much excitement and many benefits.

During training the monthly allowance is starting at $359 (under review). Upon graduation, hourly rate start at $25.32 for SO-MAO-02, salary according to the Collective Agreement (under review).
