Occupational Certification
Possession of a valid Certificate of Competency issued by Transport Canada Marine Safety (TCMS) in the capacity of Second Class Engineer, Motor Ship, with a Standard for Training, Certification and Watch Keeping (STCW) Endorsement;

OR
Canadian Coast Guard Second Class Marine Electrical Certificate;

OR
Possession of a degree or diploma in Naval Architecture from a post-secondary educational institution.
Experience
Candidates must clearly demonstrate that they meet the education and experience requirements. Failure to provide sufficient information will result in the candidate being screened out.

*Recent experience performing the duties and responsibilities consistent with any of the essential occupational certification requirements listed above within a ** marine environment.

*Recent experience in the supervision of staff in a **marine environment including the determination of work objectives, assigning work, evaluating employee performance and initiating disciplinary measures where necessary.

*"Recent experience" is identified as 3 years full time employment in the past 6 years.

**"Marine environment" is identified as either shipboard operations and/or industry directly involved with the maintenance, overhaul or repair of ships.


Experience in dealing with vessel certification and inspection involving Classification Society surveyors or Transport Canada Marine Safety Inspectors.

Experience in writing and evaluating technical specifications and proposals relating to ship refit, repair and maintenance activities.

Experience in developing budget plans for vessel repairs.

Experience in conducting technical investigations.

Education

Useful Information
Successful graduation from a recognized Post-secondary education program in one of the following fields: Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Naval Architecture.
Occupational Certification
Possession of a valid Certificate of Competency issued by Transport Canada Marine Safety (TCMS) in the capacity of First Class Engineer, Motor Ship, with a Standard for Training, Certification and Watch Keeping (STCW) Endorsement.

Certification as a Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) from the Project Management Institute.

Certification as a Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute.
Experience
*Recent experience performing the duties and responsibilities consistent with a Chief Engineer position on vessels of at least 3000 kW propulsive power and responsible for ship operation, maintenance, refit, repair or dry-dockings;

*Recent experience performing the duties and responsibilities consistent with an Electrical Engineer/Officer position, including responsibility for operation, inspection, modification, maintenance and repair of ship’s electrical systems;

*Recent experience performing the duties and responsibilities consistent with a Marine Systems Engineer, shipyard Project Manager, including responsibility for ship design, construction, modification, inspection, refit or repair.

*Recent experience performing the duties and responsibilities consistent with a Marine Surveyor position, including responsibility for inspection of ships and interpretation and application of regulatory or Classification Society requirements.

“Recent experience” is identified as 3 years full time employment in the past 6 years.

Experience in the identification of shipboard machinery and equipment problems through the use of analytical tools, technical inspection programs, maintenance history records and the resolution of these problems by recommending changes leading to greater availability of the machinery and equipment.

Experience in the use of computer software systems for tracking and recording maintenance, work orders, and inventories.

Experience in contract management.

Experience in project management.

Experience in accident investigations.
