About Seaspan Ferries

For general freight products, consumer goods and regulated commodities and automobiles, Seaspan Ferries provides a daily, scheduled truck and trailer ferry service between our conveniently located terminals on the Mainland at Tilbury in Delta and Surrey, and on Vancouver Island at Downtown Nanaimo, Duke Point Nanaimo, and Victoria (Swartz Bay).

2nd Engineer

Reporting to the Superintendent, Maintenance & Engineering the 2nd Engineer is responsible for the day to day operation of machinery found on the vessel. Responsibilities include engine room watch, performing checks, and ensuring the smooth operations of the engine room. The 1st and 2nd Engineers stand opposite watches, and are responsible for the maintenance and repairs of the vessel while on watch. Engineers are required to work in tight spaces such as the engine room bilge, and work with heavy pieces of equipment.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience

· Minimum Valid 1st or 2nd class Transport Canada Marine Motor engineering certificate and associated endorsements, MEDs, Marine Basic First Aid and Marine medical are required.
· 5 years experience with a second class engineers certificate or greater and with experience in charge of engineering duties on a vessel of 400 gross tons or larger
· Must be proficient on all vessel operational systems
· Must be able to maintain, monitor and repair marine diesel engines, hydraulic and electrical systems on the vessel
· Ability to supervise an engineering watch and instruct other engineers in their operational duties if required.
· Must demonstrate safe work practices in line with the company’s core values
· Must be able to work on their own while standing the engineering watch and manage the engineering responsibilities of a vessel.
· Must be able to take direction from a senior engineer and submit reports to him/her and the Engineering Superintendent.
· Ability to maintain the time keeping records of any junior engineers and report them to the Chief engineer.
· Must be able to oversee fuel and lube bunkering and the discharge of waste oil and sewage.
· Be able to assist with repairs at dry dock and annual refits.

Skills, Knowledge and Required Competencies

· Knowledge of applicable Transport Canada and Classification Societies requirements
· Proficient with English language (verbal and written).
· A strong team player and a creative problem solver
· Basic computer skills in MS Office
· Ability to work with a variety of individuals in various departments.
· Excellent organizational, prioritization, time management and multi-tasking skills.
· Accuracy and a keen attention to detail.
· Knowledge of marine terminologies and machinery parts.
