EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY

Superintendent (Hong Kong based) – Two positions

Seaspan Ship Management Ltd. is an international organization with its head office in Vancouver and operations in India, China, Hong Kong and Korea. Our company is owned by Seaspan Corporation (NYSE:SSW) and we deliver exceptional technical, administrative, and strategic services to a fleet of large, high-quality containerships that are chartered to major shipping lines.

Seaspan Ship Management Ltd. is currently accepting applications for Superintendents to join our Hong Kong Operations team. This role reports to the Fleet Manager in Hong Kong and is responsible for all aspects of assigned vessels including efficient technical management of vessels, compliance with Flag, Class and other mandatory or prescribed requirements, and maintaining company’s quality standards. Other responsibilities include the development and management of vessel operating budgets within area of responsibility, dry dock work and surveys, supplies to vessels, evaluating crew performance to ensure adequate competency and performance, and regular visits and inspections of assigned vessels. The objective is safe, efficient operation of the vessel with ideally no offhire. The successful candidate must be self-motivated and able to work independently under a high growth, deadline-driven, and fast paced environment.

As this position is based in Hong Kong, the candidate must be able to work in Hong Kong or be willing and able to relocate, and have no restrictions preventing international travel.

Primary Responsibilities:

Operations: This position represents the company, oversees vessel operations, and responds to questions and deal with issues regarding day to day issues, which can vary from technical questions regarding a malfunction piece of equipment to dealing with crew issues.
Compliance: Ensures that each of the assigned ships is operated in accordance with the International Safety Management Code (ISM Code). Attends to commercial concerns and ensures environmental regulation is adhered to.
Inspections: Conducts vessel inspections: Ensures compliance with regulatory and company requirements. Reviews the certification status and ensures certificates are maintained valid; Notes deficiencies and makes plans for correction or improvement. Ensures audit findings are closed out in given timeframe.
Maintains budget: Directs Purchasers on purchase of parts and other non-routine purchases, monitor OP/Ex, approves invoices. Works with purchasers and Fleet Accountants in Vancouver head office to resolve issues.
Leadership: Develops strong working relationships with officers on assigned vessels. Evaluates and reports on ship personnel and resolves or brings forward any disciplinary/performance issues. Provides briefings and technical assistance.
Other duties as required: Arranges and manages dry dock and surveys. Conducts initial investigation of accidents, incidents, hazardous occurrences and near misses.

Qualifications:

Marine Engineer with several years of experience as a Chief Engineer.
Valid Class 1 Seagoing Engineers certificate.
Previous experience as a Technical Superintendent (if not within Seaspan).
Good command of English language with strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work independently and operate in a team environment effectively, multitask, and meet deadlines under strict time constraints.
Good knowledge of Microsoft Office (including Outlook, Word and Excel).

Job Demands

Regular international travel is required and may be on short notice.
Must have mobility to conduct vessel inspections.
Required to carry a Blackberry and check e-mail outside of office hours and maintain home internet connection.

I tellya! 15 years ago!! no, wait, I was offered that 15 years ago with V ships out of Monaco.....turned it down, I like "me" time. It's a very challenging job and I'm basically a lazy bugger.
