Position Summary

Seaspan Ship Management Ltd. is currently accepting applications for a Superintendent to support the Operations Department. Reporting to the Director, Fleet Management, this role manages all aspects of assigned vessels. The successful candidate must be a quick learner who is able to work under pressure and work effectively in a team and independently under a high growth, deadline-driven, and fast paced environment. In addition, this position carries a Blackberry and a laptop, and international travels under short notices are required for training and sailing purposes.

Primary Responsibilities:

Operations: Oversees vessel operations. Responds to questions and deal with issues regarding day to day issues. This can vary from technical questions regarding a malfunction piece of equipment to dealing with crew issues. Represents the company.
Compliance: Ensures that each of the assigned ships is operated in accordance with the International Safety Management Code (ISM Code). Attends to commercial concerns and ensures environmental regulation is adhered to. Liaises with other departments and ship staff to address and close any non-conformity items.
Inspections: Conducts vessel inspections: Ensures compliance with regulatory and company requirements. Reviews the certification status and ensures certificates are maintained valid; Notes deficiencies and makes plans for correction or improvement. Ensures audit findings are closed out in given time frame.
Maintains budget: Provides direction on purchase of parts and other non-routine purchases, monitors OP/Ex (operation expenses), approves invoices. Works with purchasers and fleet accountant to resolve issues with vendors
Leadership: Develops strong working relationships with officers on assigned vessels. Evaluates and reports on ship personnel and resolves or brings forward any disciplinary/performance issues. Provides briefings and technical assistance.
As required: Arranges and manages dry dock and surveys. Conducts initial investigation of accidents, incidents, hazardous occurrences and near misses.
Performs other duties as required

Qualifications & Abilities:

Marine Engineer with a minimum of three years of experience sailing as a Chief Engineer on a deep sea vessel
External candidates must have a minimum of two years’ experience as a technical superintendent
Must be able to communicate effectively in English.
Able to use MS Office at an intermediate level
Containership experience with panamax size ships
Familiarity with Seaspan Corporation vessels is an asset.

Salary Range:

Salary range is $120,000 - 130,000/annually, depending on experience. A benefits package is provided which includes extended medical, MSP, RRSP matching, life insurance, and short and long term disability.
