Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ship (AOPS) Safety Specialist

Irving Shipbuilding Inc. located at 3099 Barrington St. Halifax NS B3K 5M7, is part of the J.D. Irving Ltd. group of companies and is in the business of building quality ships and repairing vessels. The company’s primary site is Halifax Shipyard, with three other locations in the Maritime Provinces. Irving Shipbuilding is currently working on a number of significant projects for the Department of National Defence and the Canadian Coast Guard. In October of 2011, Irving Shipbuilding was selected to build the Royal Canadian Navy’s new combat fleet. The combat package includes construction of 6-8 Arctic/Offshore Patrol Ships (AOPS) and 15 Canadian Surface Combatants over the next three decades.

This is a permanent, full time role (one opening) based in Halifax NS.

Reporting to the AOPS Specialty Engineering Lead, this individual will have the responsibility for managing and overseeing the safety engineering and design products associated with the AOPS.

Responsibilities

Validation that the Safety Engineering technical products (Safety Hazard Analysis Report and Hazard Log) developed by the design agent and system integrators meet the requirements of the ship specification, associated references and the shipyard
Management of the Safety Engineering technical interfaces between the design agent and the integrators
Providing a Safety Engineering technical interface between the design agent, integrators and Canada
Management of Safety Engineering and design change between Canada, the design agent, and the integrators
Responsibility for the development of the Safety Case Report
Support of technical and design review meetings both internally and externally

Qualifications

Qualified Engineer with Safety Engineering marine experience
Minimum of 10 years relevant leadership experience in Naval marine environment
Knowledge of working with a Government and Naval customer base
Proven ability to achieve high performance levels in a complex fast moving environment
Ability to manage through teamwork and influence
Familiarity with AOPS design and requirements preferred
Familiarity with Canadian and ISI AOPS technical team preferred

All successful applicants must meet requirements for Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP), Canadian Government Security clearance, and U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).
