Small Ship BIG Adventure

Dates of employment:
February 01 – March 31, 2015 – Lead winter maintenance work, refit and seasonal ship yard.
April 01 – October 31, 2015 – Engineer / Mate role on board vessel. At sea shift work.

Our company:

Maple Leaf Adventures is a highly respected marine ecotourism company that operates small ship nature cruises to world-class wilderness destinations along the coasts of British Columbia and Alaska.

The Vessel:

MV Swell (O.N. 130882). 80 foot long converted passenger vessel.

Our Ideal Candidate:

Marine engineering ticket or demonstrated experience working with vessels’ engineering and systems, wood boat maintenance and upkeep. Shipyard experience an asset.
Able to work as part of a small team with considerable interaction with guests.
Able to work at sea for extended periods in a variety of weather conditions and sea states.
Flexible & organized, with proven ability to anticipate the needs of the operation.
A background in natural history interpretation, tourism, or guiding is not mandatory but an asset.

Duties:

Responsible for the mechanical operation of the engine room and its auxiliaries, the successful candidate is required to act as engineer in charge of the engine room and auxiliaries by supervising and participating in activating, operating and controlling the main engines; inspecting, cleaning and performing electronic, plumbing, mechanical and hydraulic repairs and maintenance.
Ensures that back-up systems are in operational order; accompanies the vessel as required during refit schedules and assists technical personnel in carrying out repairs and alterations; maintain an adequate level of supplies and routine parts.
Establishes a departmental preventative maintenance schedule for the vessel.
Stands watch duties while on board.
Assists with guiding, guest services and hosting of clients during ecotourism operation.

Compensation and Benefits:

Daily wage of $ 225 / day + guest tips.
Meals, accommodations aboard and transportation to and from the vessel.

Job Requirements
Qualifications:

Qualifications (Mandatory):

Marine Engineer Ticket (3rd class) or demonstrated equivalency in experience.
Marine Emergency Duties (MED) A2 or higher.
Small Vessel Operators Proficiency (SVOP).
ROC-MC or GOC.
Must be able to legally work in Canada. Canadian passport is mandatory.

Qualifications (Asset):

Marine/ Wilderness 1st aid an asset.
Relevant work experience on BC coast.
Degree or post-secondary education in natural/environmental sciences or adventure tourism is an asset. Preferred candidates will bring other guiding/outdoor leadership certifications and relevant experience.
BC Coast Navigation.
Small Vessels Masters (150 ton).
